It's reportedly costing billions of dollars to treat hospitalized unvaccinated COVID patients

Unvaccinated covid patients should be charged for the costs of their treatment

A new analysis from the Kaiser Family Foundation pegged the preventable cost of hospitalizing and treating unvaccinated COVID patients between June and August at an estimated $5.7 billion, CNN reports.

Using data from both the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service as well as health care studies, the report's authors found that each of the 287,000 "preventable" COVID-19 hospitalizations in the last three months cost around $20,000. When multiplied together, the two numbers amount to the $5.7 billion figure.

The analysis deems "preventable" hospitalizations to be "hospitalizations of unvaccinated adults for COVID-19 treatment primarily, while accounting for any post-vaccination infections that would have been expected if this population had been vaccinated," per CNN. The authors believe $5.7 billion to likely be "a conservative estimate of costs."

The study also "did not account for outpatient care costs, and some data indicates inpatient health care costs for Covid-19 treatment may be higher than the $20,000 figure used," per CNN.

I’ve been wondering what this is costing. But the inpatient costs have to be a whole lot higher than 20k per patient. I’ve had outpatient surgery that cost more than that. I’d love to stick the unvaccinated with the costs of their care, but we’d probably spend at least as much trying to collect it. At a minimum, the states should be stuck with the bill, not the Federal Government, especially since so many state governors are actively discouraging masks and vaccines.

We need to raise the cost of insurance for the unvaccinated and make them pay for the costs associated with their stupidity

Just two weeks after Delta Air Lines announced they would begin penalizing unvaccinated employees with a $200 monthly surcharge, the company said that nearly 20 percent of those staff members have opted to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

Delta's chief health officer, Henry Ting, said the figure represents "a huge number in terms of shifting that group that's most reluctant," during a media briefing held last week by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, according to Insider.

Ting said that out of Delta's 20,000 unvaccinated workers, around one-fifth have gotten the shot in the past two weeks. The rising vaccination rates come after the company said that unvaccinated employees enrolled in Delta's health care plan will face a $200 monthly surcharge beginning in November.

When the extra fee was first announced on August 25, roughly 74 percent of Delta's 80,000 employees were vaccinated. Now, Delta's vaccination rate has climbed to 78 percent, Insider reported.
