This was a waste of 300 million dollars at minimum. The GOP should foot the bill.
They also must pay at the ballot box next year.
The law must be changed. There should be at least 33% of all voters agreeing to a recall.
Also, there must be a gap between each effort of at least one year. If the first attempt fails (not enough signatures), you wait another 12 months before being allowed to request another recall.

(9,528 posts)But give a Governor an option to resign before the vote is certified, if he chooses, and allow the Lt. Gov to take office. If the Gov likes his Lt. Gov, this would be a way to avoid this fiasco, but still let a recall proceed if the Governor didn't have confidence in the Lt. Gov.

(9,528 posts)when he beat Gray Davis in a recall. Politics is cyclical -- if the pendulum swings to far in voters' eyes there is a backlash.
If we wanted to recall the next Schwarzenegger or Reagan, would you want a Rep to step in?

(91,965 posts)problem with a recall system where a Governor could be removed, not for wrong doing, but ideological reasons, and an alternate candidate could get significantly less votes than the person they tried to remove, and bcecome Governor. Our recall process is inherently unDemocratic
They should also raise the signature requirement to at least 25% minimum. No other state that ha recalls has a threshold as low as we have it, 11%
There were 3 attempts to recall Newsom. This one succeeded with the help of a judge who extended the time to gather signatures by 3 months
The recall system is easy to abuse in California, and that is why the republicans have used it as their back door. It is also extremely expensive. This cost the state 250 million dollars.
Things have changed significantly from the examples you cite. We have jungle primaries, except for presidential elections where the top two vote getters in the primary, regardless of party, run against each other in the general election
We missed the bullet this time because people were paying attention
Another danger we need to be aware of is that republicans for years have been trying for years that in presidential general elections, it isnt winner take all in electoral votes. Every so often they try to sneak that in through the initiative process.
They also have tried to cut up our state into several small states.

The party in power votes to decide the replacement. Not a general election.

(50,453 posts)At the present time the Republicans in my county are trying to set up a recall for two Republican county commissioners. They arent far enough to the right for their taste.
Their sin was voting against a proposal to officially endorse the John Birch Society.
Forget about your suggestions to make the recall process better. The only cures for a bad elected official should be impeachment and loss of the next election.

And I will leave it at that so as not to expose the more, in this case the more extremely so, vulgar aspects of my personality.
There is an election next year. Campaign, and if you've something worthwhile to say perhaps you will be supported by the majority. This was nothing more, nothing less, than a power grab. And I would have been equally offended if we had an R in office and the Dems pulled this.

(9,528 posts)So if a majority had voted to recall Newsom, he could still have stayed in office as long as he got more votes than any other candidate due to votes split many ways.
Also prohibit recalls in the last year of an office-holder's term.
Limit the grounds for recall to only serious charges of malfeasance such as findings or crimes or corruption - not just because you disagree with handling of issues. Dems didn't like Schwarzenegger but didn't waste taxpayer money on a recall, for Pete's sake.

They can spend other people's money and openly commit crimes but they will never suffer consequences.
That's why they are the way they are. If there were consequences for their actions they would act responsibly but there never are so they don't.

(26,080 posts)party in the past election that put them into office may sign up for such a recall petition and it should take 15% of them to start the ball rolling.
Then when it comes time to cast the vote at the polls on if they should be removed from office only those that were again registered of the same party at the time of the last election may vote on if they should be removed and it should take 55% or more to vote to remove them.
Otherwise the only other way to remove them should be via impeachment for committing a crime just like every other politician and we can hopefully avoid a repeat of this partisan hack show by the Republicans to remove a candidate that won a fair election.
