My daughter and 12-year-old grandson live with us here in Oregon. He just turned 12 and got his first vaccination three weeks ago. He is supposed to get his second vaccination this week. We just got notification from his school that he has been directly exposed at school and has to quarantine at home for the next 10 days. He has only been in school for 4 days. He is not too happy, plus he can't play in his soccer games. The message from the Health Department is that the adults in our house, who are all vaccinated, do not need to quarantine.
I posted 3 weeks ago that my un-vaccinated daughter-in-law came down with COVID after attending a bachelorette in Arizona. Our baby grand-daughter then got sick. Then our vaccinated son got quite sick as a breakthrough case. After 3 weeks he gets to go back to work tomorrow. My daughter-in-law and the baby are doing fine. I am so sick of this virus.

(32,755 posts)Question...does he now do zoom classes to keep up?
mommymarine2003
(261 posts)I would think that he will be zooming as he has a school chromebook, but we have not had any instructions from the school yet.

(1,475 posts)On and off like a light bulb. He has some antibodies right now. Will they be enough? Hard to say but his infection should be milder should he get sick

(35,300 posts)R0 isn't 100, most exposure results in no transmission.

(34,062 posts)R0 is around 8 - comparable to chicken pox & measles - two of the most contagious illnesses around.

(3,013 posts)We are going to owe the kids two years of normal childhood and school. At least. To keep passing these kids on in grades is a joke for most of them. Not their fault and not the school's fault, this is just not an environment where one can focus and learn. I hope I live another 20 years as I am very curious how this shapes the youth of today and how that promulgates in their later years.

(261 posts)His parents have separated, so he has been stressed from that. He was so lost when it came to his school work and was barely passing. My husband spent a lot of time helping him with school and communicating with his teachers. He wound up getting straight A's. However, I still think that he is going to be struggling this year, and we will have to keep motivating him. Missing a week of school is not going to help. I sure hope that the school works out some form of zooming for the quarantined kids.

Our DIL is a special ed teacher working on site right now, but she's experienced from last year in remote in case they need to return to that. At least your district won't have to go through the extensive trauma of inventing that wheel if they go to it.

(261 posts)He is doing fine. He is really good about wearing a mask. He even wore his mask at his first soccer game last Saturday. I just don't want him to get behind at school. He also has been so happy being around other kids. He has had no friends since coming to live with us this past February. Everyone has been so isolated.

(34,062 posts)My employee was just diagnosed (breakthrough case). Her symptoms started Saturday - I was with her Friday (within the 48-hour look-back window). Masked - both of us. But it apparently doesn't matter for purposes of ticking the exposure box.
My daughter was exposed yesterday. (Her own stupid fault - she was riding in a car, unmasked, with an un-vaccinated jerk. Fortunately he may not have COVID - BUT - we have to assume he does since his pregnant fiance has it.)
On Friday I've got my 9-month sarcoma scans (a very aggressive cancer - I get scanned for metastasis every 3 months), and the 3rd 5-year release for breast cancer (each doctor has to individually release me - this is the 3rd). Two different hospitals. I'm waiting to find out whether their screening questions (which include exposure within the last 14 days) will mean I have to reschedule.
And - I'm doing a 150 mile bike ride for my 65th birthday the weekend after next. I have to have no exposures in the 14 days before the ride in order to do the ride. My employee exposed me 15 days out - but I'm in a high-exposure job (I'll see 130 students tomorrow). There are currently 4 out due to COVID.
Not to mention canceling my parents' 65th and 66th anniversary celebrations, my 40th (last weekend), our 40th holiday party last December - and likely again this year.

(261 posts)So sorry to hear about your exposure to this horrible virus. It really does mess up so many things and makes me so angry when a person is too stupid or selfish to get vaccinated.

(25,848 posts)What exactly is her problem?
I do hope she did not go to a hospital and take up precious medical resources.
I have zero sympathy for the un-vaccinated. There is zero excuse for that.
