A man has been arrested by South Carolina authorities who allege he assisted SC lawyer Alex Murdaugh in an assisted suicide scheme which would allow Murdaugh's son to collectt 10 million dollars in insurance money. The man was a former client of Murdaugh's. The man arrested, Edward Smith, is alleged to have supplied drugs to Murdaugh in the past.
I link to the NY Post because the story deserves to be read in the tabloids:

(37,985 posts)The alleged conspiracy was laid out in court documents released after Curtis Edward Smith, 61, was collared for the botched Sept. 4 shooting, which Murdaugh, 53, survived.
Mr. Murdaugh supplied Mr. Smith with a firearm and directed Mr. Smith to shoot him in the head, the affidavit said, adding that Murdaugh hoped an insurance payout would go to his sole surviving son.
The affidavit indicates that Murdaugh confessed to the scheme on Monday and named Smith as the shooter. Smith then admitted to being there and getting rid of the gun, the document says...
Stunning turn of events indeed.

(33,643 posts)There's word he's a person of interest in the death of his family, so ... I thought maybe the point was try to harm him but not kill him. A distraction/throwing the cops off his scent if you will. Make them think someones out to kill him as well, and maybe THAT person ... is the killer of his family.
But yeah, that he actually meant to get killed didn't occur to me.
