If Milley resigned it would take a huge meme weapon from the GOP. They really don't want him

to resign. They want him to be fired or stick around for the 22 elections. He will always be regarded by most Dems and the left as a hero so he has little to lose by resigning. I don't know his actual status but can he just retire?

We cannot give into their stupid, fake, cries of outrage.

Please remember that Nixon went behind LBJ's back and had the Vietnamese scuttle peace talks in 1968. Nixon extended the Vietnam War for another 5 years, to get elected. How many Americans and Vietnamese died in those 5 years?

Please remember that Reagan went behind Carter's back and made a deal with Iran to hold onto the American Hostages in Iran until after the election, to weaken Carter so Reagan could get elected. The deal included selling weapons to Iran, who was classified as a "State sponsor of Terrorism" and was explicitly forbidden to sell weapons to. Reagan used the proceeds of said illegal sales to fund right wing death squads in Nicaragua (Contras).

Right wingers have framed the narrative to paint themselves as strong in national defense, but have actually proven themselves to be willing to put Americans in danger and make deals with supposed "enemies" to further their own power. They have NO authority to talk about "treason" or anything of the sort, yet we give into the narrative by considering whether Milley should resign for using whatever appropriate authority to curtail the actions of a complete idiot, to do actual harm to the United States and to the world for the sake of retaining power that he lost through a legitimate democratic election.

We cannot continue to go with the narrative. Milley did nothing wrong here. TRUMP DID. THE REPUBLICANS DID. Just like they ALWAYS seem to do. They have the track record for being traitors, not Democrats, not career military, not the bureaucrats who help the country function despite changes in government. There is ONE identifiable variable that causes the problems in the US and that is Republican Conservatism.

And how he answers questions about what happened, and how much the Republicans freak out about this. I can envision a situation where Repubs demand his resignation or they will withhold votes for everything.

They could also start putting a Senator on the floor objecting to Unanimous Consent for everything. It would make VP Harris move into the Senate full time just to keep voting on moving anything forward. I don't think anyone here realizes how much of a threat revoking unanimous consent for literally everything is. The minority can literally shut down all order in the Senate given the proper motivation.

Biden may give him up depending on how volatile the reaction is to him.

and would demonstrate to them that they can get anything that they demand, and that they can still act as the majority party, even when they're not.

They can and will use those techniques to get whatever they want whenever they want it, or when they just want to pull off a dominance display. Our side had better have some counter moves ready.

What you're describing is not something we can Neville Chamberlain our way out of.

They interceded to prevent Nixon from launching nukes when he was drunk and on his way out.

I hope that during the hearings, someone brings up the time Republican senators tried to quash Obama's agreement with Iran by communicating directly with Iran's leaders and telling them the agreement would be worthless.

In a rare direct congressional intervention into diplomatic negotiations, the Republicans signed an open letter addressed to “leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran” declaring that any agreement without legislative approval could be reversed by the next president “with the stroke of a pen.”

Resigning as a result of this would support the republican notion that Milley was out of line, which would reinforce the republican BS that what happened on January 6th wasn't a huge deal, etc.

But it *was* a *huge* deal. It was an unprecedented attack on our democratic process, egged on and supported by a sitting president. And it was part of a larger project to undermine our democracy and democratic institutions in his attempt to hang onto power. It was not democracy as usual--it was an attack on democracy from within such as we haven't really seen in action on that scale. Milley swore an oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

Of course republicans are going to whine about Milley, because they want to pretend that trump wasn't really a threat.
