Newsom's win was actually much bigger than people are reporting.

The number you'll see for @larryelder will be 45%—but that's of votes cast on Question 2, which almost half the electorate left blank. He's got only 24.6% of the total votes cast, compared to 65% for @GavinNewsom remaining governor. That's a bloodbath, worse even than Cox in 2018.

Question 2 was who should replace Newsom. Dems in CA told people to leave the second one blank, to show that it was Newsom or no one.

Let's say the final totals on yes or no on recall are

62% No
38% Yes

and on Q 2

Elder wins 51% of that vote

that means only

19.38% of ALL voters wanted Elder as Governor

They finally called it for Newsom around midnight last night, but the numbers and percentages never changed. From the time they first started reporting the vote counts - until they finally called it - the percentages were 60-something% for "No" (favoring Newsom) and 30-something% for "Yes" (favoring Elder). It was never even close, from what I saw last night.

With no other candidates on the ballot, he will do better than 24.6% of course. Likely around 67-33 when he is head to head solo with Newsom.

He just had better media for the recall, but the recall was pushed by Q -publicans, not really the entire GOP. A normal election is going to have a wider range on GOP candidates that might attract more centerist "non-affiliated" voters and moderate GOP members who have been sitting out some elections because they couldn't handle the radical right.

We are just as likely to see two Democrats running for governor.

head to head the replacement candidates polled incredibly poorly against Newsom.

None are viable 2022 candidates. There are no viable GOP candidates inside California. The national party his killed the state party.

22. The Cali recall law is idiotic

If someone is duly elected to a 4 year term, barring impeachable offenses, they have the right to serve it. The threshold for the percent of Californians that need to sign a recall petition to undo the previous majority and force an additional election is absurdly low. California needs a ballot initiative to abolish their recall procedure. Theoretically, Newsom could have lost by getting 49% on question 1 on whether he should be removed and then Elder could have gotten 45% of the vote on question 2 and Elder would have won, 45% to 49%. Dumb law.

Elder could have 'won' with any sort of PLURALITY -- just for giggles we'll say 24% (but it could have been 15 or even 12)

So Newsom's 49.9% 'NO' vote on question #1 loses to Elder's 24% vote on question #2.

No primary, no run off - no head to head - no majority vote ... It's completely ridiculous and insane!

They caught the Dems off guard with their crime ring, and used Schwarzenegger's star status on top of that to woo voters.

They were hoping Elder would be another, but that guy hit the starting blocks sounding like a nut.

I see Elder has a show on tv. I guess the GOP is getting ready for the next Gubernatorial with him.
That guy is creepy. I'll bet he even had a COVID vaccine, and wore a mask to avoid getting sick—but like the lowest filth on earth, he doesn't want anyone else to do that.
