Just In: A Pennsylvania senate subcommittee has voted to approve 17 subpoenas for personal information on every voter in PA, including partial social security numbers and drivers license numbers, as part of their investigation of the 2020 election.

Democrats question whether the committee even has the authority to gather such information, and called the investigation baseless. Republicans said they were just looking for "facts" to make better policy in the future.
Story here:
Republicans in Pennsylvania, which President Biden won by more than 80,000 votes, have sought to cast doubt on the elections outcome.
Republicans seek Pennsylvania voters personal information as they try to review the 2020 results.
G.O.P. lawmakers approved subpoenas seeking license and partial Social Security numbers for every voter. Democrats questioned whether the move was even legal.

Pennsylvania Republicans moved on Wednesday to seek personal information on every voter in the state as part of a brewing partisan review of the 2020 election results, rubber-stamping more than a dozen subpoenas for drivers license numbers and partial Social Security numbers.
The expansive request for personal information, directed at Pennsylvanias Department of State and approved in a vote by Republicans on a State Senate subcommittee, is the first major step of the election inquiry. The move adds Pennsylvania to a growing list of states that have embarked on partisan-led reviews of the 2020 election, including a widely criticized attempt to undermine the outcome in Arizonas largest county.
Democrats in the Senate questioned whether the committee even had the authority to request such information, which state law generally shields from public disclosure, and denounced the investigation as nakedly partisan and unfounded.
Democrats control several of the top offices in Pennsylvania including those of governor, attorney general and secretary of state and it was not immediately clear what legal basis they might have to challenge the subpoenas, or whether they would. Nor was it clear how the transfer of information would begin to take place, if does proceed. The Department of State did not immediately respond to requests for comment or issue a statement on the subpoenas.

OP
Every PA GOP candidate should be asked why they support this government overreach.

They may not have the legal authority, but I doubt that anything will be done to stop them.

(3,245 posts)2. I saw this earlier,
not sure where this goes, but if my personal data is shared with people who are not entitled to have it, then I would believe I would have cause to take action. Against who, I don't know.
This request reeks of an invasion of my privacy.
I don't see this going anywhere, personally.

This is the kind of government intrusion that drives already paranoid conservatives around the bend.
If the Democrats can't use this to shake them up...
