COVID-19 vaccine expert not as concerned about full stadiums as people not getting shots

If you're someone who looks at full NFL stadiums and worries they are potentially superspreading events, you are far from alone. If you see people in close quarters watching baseball inside a full stadium and believe COVID-19 gives that a huge thumbs up, well, one of the best immunologists in the world says don't panic.

"If you have a stadium full of people and many of them are vaccinated, they will be protected, and others will be protected, from serious illness," said Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, one of the creators of the Moderna vaccine, in an interview with USA TODAY Sports.

"There are some concerns," she said. "People who study what we do worry about things like people screaming at the top of their lungs in stadiums. But overall I'm not as concerned about stadiums as I am about things like young people who fail to take vaccination seriously.

the shoulder-to-shoulder, packed stadiums are vaccinated she's way wrong. Has she not been paying attention to how many people are not vaccinated and say they have no intention of getting vaccinated.

And guess what demographic has the highest percent of anti-vaxxers? White males, who constitute a very sizable percentage for sports fans.

Reading between the lines, I heard "all-things-being-equal" comparison. If she could fix one or the other she would fix the vaccines and not the stadiums.

She should also be concerned about the crowded stadiums in low-vaxx red states with anti-vaxx governors. It's highly likely that many in attendance at football and baseball game there are unvaxxed, maskless and cheering, yelling, with droplets spraying out into the air around them.

Sounds like she hasn't watched any football games lately.

But that's not a uniform policy in stadiums all over the nation. And in low vaccination-rate states (red southern states, many with anti-vaxx governors) I doubt that's the policy.

Many areas where these events are occurring still have extremely low vax rates. And even if vaxxed, you can still get it and transmit it, especially if you're exposed to a very high viral load.

is you still have a lot of people clustered closely together at concession areas, bathrooms, and getting into/out of the stadium. Seems to me like it would be smart to at least mask up until you get to your seats.

If you've watched any games lately, social distancing in the stands is no more. And masks? Forget about it.

the University of Montana Grizzly football games and we're not going this year. Our seats are two rows up from the field...I cannot imagine sitting there with all of the screaming fans behind me spewing their droplets onto me. Fortunately, when I list our tickets for sale on Craigslist, they are sold in minutes.

No way would I go. As far as I am concerned, this shouldn't even be considered outdoors, as there are way too many people too close together.
Would be interesting to see how many would catch covid-assuming anyone is following that.

Went to Marshall-Navy game labor day weekend. I am vaxxed, Moderna x 2.

My friend who rode with me (unvaxxed) got sick that Monday, very sick. My nose started running and I started sneezing on Tuesday. I got tested Wednesday and was positive.

I never had a fever, but i did get runny nose, sneezing and coughing for 4-5 days. And I did lose sense of taste and smell. Luckily it just hit me like a head cold, it never got into my chest. But I did get a bit sick.

Today is my tenth day of isolation and all symptoms are gone. CDC says after being sick with COVID, to isolate for 10 days, and ten days after onset symptoms, if fever free for more than 24 hours and all symptoms are gone or largely improved to end isolation. But continue to wear a mask indoors.

Moderna x 2 saved me, would not want to face COVID unvaxxed. No sir.
