(14,742 posts)If they are going to use iodine, they need this recipe:
Ingrediants:
-- 1 kg pure iodine crystals
-- 4 liters 95% liquid ammonia
Mix well, some grinding may be required. Dry to a solid. Hit with a hammer until... well, the rest isn't needed.

(28,858 posts)I drank it for two or three days to cure a chronic and
persistent UTI. It worked. I have never had one since.
However, it would never work on a virus.
No antibiotic will work on a virus.

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased awareness of operating room transmission risks of the responsible virus, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). SARS-CoV-2 can remain aerosolized for at least three hours under experimental conditions and may persist for greater than 72 h on plastic and stainless steel surfaces; this creates substantial risks to all healthcare professionals [1]. The virus may reside in high concentrations in the nasal cavity, nasopharynx, oral cavity and oropharynx, and thus opportunities for dissemination of SARS-CoV-2 in the operating suite have been hypothesized [2, 3]. Intubation, as well as transoral and transnasal procedures, may pose a unique risk as viral particles may be aerosolized while performing these measures and contact with mucosa can be extensive. Various anecdotes confirm a relatively high prevalence of COVID-19 among otorhinolaryngologists, and for this reason, special precautions have been proposed for many aerosol-generating transnasal procedures [4]. Given that a minority of infected patients may remain asymptomatic, and that rapid and reliable screening remains limited, prevention against viral exposure has primarily focused on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) [5,6,7]. Topical oronasal treatment with povidone-iodine (PVP-I), better known as Betadine (Avrio Health, LP), may be an effective method to immediately reduce the viral load of the upper aerodigestive tract and thus decrease the risk of inadvertent virus transmission.

Is this the "storm" they're all talking about?
But really ... it's not funny. I'm waiting for a doc to comment on this.

(8,703 posts)not swallow it. You only gargle with about a tablespoon or less if you get a sore throat. Any Betadine you can buy in the store will be very diluted - even the betadine for cuts/rashes. Stronger Betadine is mostly used in hospitals. Betadine is great for mites in dogs ears or any cuts or rashes your animals might have.
The U.S. was historically iodine deficient prior to the early 1920s, particularly in the goiter belt region of the Great Lakes, Appalachians, and the northwestern area of the country, due to the effects of natural atmospheric processes. Following the successful implementation of salt iodization program in Switzerland, the introduction of iodized table salt in the U.S. during the 1920s significantly improved its iodine nutritional status. However, although recent national studies demonstrate that the general population is overall iodine sufficient, salt iodization in the U.S. is not universal, and certain subsets of the population, including pregnant and lactating women and their offspring, may be at risk for mild to moderate iodine deficiency. As such, a public health approach by the American Thyroid Association and the Endocrine Society advocate U.S. women to take a supplement containing 150 µg iodine/day beginning preconception. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5327366/

(17,154 posts)And to use malaise's words, let me make this pellucidly clear; I am not into woo remedies for covid!
I have a bottle of Betadine Sore Throat Gargle, it's a year or so old. I believe the Australian packaging is different to that in the US. Here is what was printed on the bottle until around one year ago:
"Betadine ready to use sore throat gargle is an antibacterial and antiviral gargle."
Here's the pharmacists pix of the bottle. You need to use the magnified thumbnails: https://www.amcal.com.au/betadine-sore-throat-gargle---120ml-p-9300655122548
Yesterday I checked the label on a bottle of the same stuff while shopping. The 'antiviral' has been removed on very new bottles.
This is making a mountain out of a molehill. The stuff was marketed as an antiviral. Now on their website they are saying that it doesn't kill covid. End of story.

(53,032 posts)It doesn't need to enter through the mouth.
I am not discussing the ways Covid can be transmitted.
This thread and several others over the past few days have heaped scorn on people who 'gargle with iodine'. I am pointing out that an iodine-based sore throat gargle, at one early point during the Covid pandemic, was labelled 'Anti Viral'.
You can draw a straight line from wearing masks to assuming that an anti-viral gargle could help destroy the covid virus. I just want to ammeliorate the derision that is being heaped on people who, FOR ONCE, may not deserve it.
