A fight broke out on the UAB campus Tuesday afternoon as a man and woman identifying themselves as preachers were attacked by a person believed to be a student.
A witness to the incident who captured it on video told AL.com the pair were carrying signs saying things to the effect that women belong in the kitchen, they shouldnt be in college....just really misogynistic stuff.
The video shows a female, believed to be a student, striking the man who said he was a preacher and knocking him to the ground. It was then that UAB campus police intervened.
The university provided few details when asked to comment on the incident.
There was a concerning, very unfortunate altercation on campus yesterday between demonstrators and what appeared to be a student. We cannot comment further at this time, as this is an ongoing investigation, UAB spokesman Tyler Greer.

I'm pretty much anti violence but I can't help but give this girl a big thumbs up.

(13,512 posts)Speech is protected only from government interference. It's not protected from being rejected to any degree by any private citizen. The whole thing was just a stunt anyway, like all such sign-waving "protests" performed primarily for social media. The Ken on the ground has to work on his "I've fallen and I can't get up" shtick.
Is never a proper response to words. I have a really hard time believing I have to make this point on a progressive site. We are truly in strange times...

(11,784 posts)are allowed to go onto college campuses and harass tuition-paying young women, with little interference from university administration. It happened to me as a PhD student in Oklahoma and more recently, as a tenured faculty member at WVU. I got called all manner of misogynistic bullshit because I dared wear- well, whatever I felt like wearing- and have tattoos. Having someone singling me out and shouting at me, or waving a giant poster of an aborted foetus (also happened at Oklahoma) is unacceptable. The poster-waving woman got knocked on her ass because she stepped in front of my bike. Oh well.

It doesn't rise to the criminal definition of harassment either. They are merely stating an opinion, one that is rare and isn't going to be convincing to people on a college campus.

(82,383 posts)merely for disagreement is as hypocritical as any right winger could be.
They are just saying stuff, and stuff that is not very convincing at that. Why be so afraid of it?

He was a young, good-looking fellow and eventually, you probably guessed it, he got caught having sex with the women in his flock, impregnating one.

If we are going to condone violence against those whose speech we don't like we really have no ground to stand on when others act against speech they do not like.
I recall it wasn't long ago there were demands for harsh punishment for someone who ripped up a BLM sign. In that case it was only a crime against property, this is a crime against a person.

I know, sometimes you can't avoid them, and you wonder why you should. But I think them seeing their own ineffectiveness will rid the campus of them sooner. "No one cares what you think."

What an unbelievably dumb thing to do.
