Democracy Corps conducted web surveys this week to test the effectiveness of two Obama ads. One compared an Obama campaign ad featuring actor Morgan Freeman talking about the president's economic achievements with an ad from GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney. The other compared an ad on Obama's plans for the future with an ad on Romney's plans.
Carville and Greenberg found both Obama ads were viewed more favorably than Romney's by those who took the survey. The ad featuring Freeman -- which was of particular concern to the advisers because of its message on gains in the economy -- also tested well, as they wrote, "allaying fears that the campaign had made a premature turn to underscore economic gains on the economy that have emerged in the last month."
Still, they wrote that neither strategy on talking about the economy seemed to work equally across the board. Swing voters, seniors and white non-college-educated voters responded well to the ad on the progress made by Obama, while minorities and self-identified Democrats were more drawn to the ad on his plans for the future.
Carville and Greenberg spoke in May 2010 about the political challenges of dealing with the economy, advising the White House to focus on fiscal responsibility and job growth.

(1,277 posts)Ive seen it dozens of times here in Oklahoma, which is the only way we get presidential ads. It's also being used in excellent time slots. It was used twice during the premiere of Walking Dead Sunday night. Also saw it on both the Sunday and Monday night NFL games. They would have had to reserve those slots months ago. Very well targeted.

(6,067 posts)I don't own a TV, but it's everywhere online. And I live in the reddest state in the union, a state where very few candidates in any election even bother running ads, because the outcome of most elections is known a year or two in advance. So I assume it's national, which annoyed me, because if they're paying to pipe ads like that to my state, they're wasting money. I don't think it's the fault of the campaign so much as it is that internet advertizing isn't yet as refined as it ought to be. It's still annoying, though.

(1,277 posts)As I said its not being played gratuitously. Walking Dead is very popular as is the NFL. They also would have had to lock in those slots months ago at cheaper rates than what Romney is getting with his pay as you go strategy. Every presidential campaign has a national ad strategy. Obama's campaign has been pretty smart with theirs IMO.

(51,574 posts)Democratic strategist James Carville found it hard to spin President Barack Obama's debate performance last night, saying on CNN that it looked like he "did not want to be there."
I had one overwhelming impression, Carville said. I did everything I could not to reach it, but it looked like Romney wanted to be there and President Obama didnt want to be there.

He added: "My point is this President Obama came in, he wanted to have a conversation. It takes two people to have a conversation. Mitt Romney came in with a chainsaw. Hes trying to talk to a chainsaw.
Seems like an accurate description of what transpired.
