It's the greatest tool the patriarchy has ever invented.

(18,486 posts)You should read the poll report. Many people in organized religious groups have very high rates of vaccination.

Up there with politics, economics, and all the other imaginary constructs we allow to rule over us every day without a whimper.

(38,302 posts)They're not so afraid of dying themselves until they actually get sick. They don't start to have doubts about their gods saving them until then.
Anti-intellectual religions are all like this.

(972 posts)the expression just doesnt sit well - feels odd to me. Another generational thing I guess as it seems to be people in their 30s and younger who say it.
SergeStorms
(19,186 posts)I guess someone in the U.S. appropriated the expression, or some Aussie ex-pats used it and it just caught on.
I wouldn't spend a whole lot of time worrying about it.

(972 posts)but sheesh Im not keeping up with the times.
I do find it fascinating how language shifts and changes - from new phrases to new meanings for existing words. Its just not organic to me anymore. Such is life.

Edited to add: the title of the survey is Religious groups, plural.

You'd think they'd relish the fluffy white clouds, angels playing harps, old friends and dear relatives awaiting their arrival, having their very own room in god's house, and all that.
That's a very interesting observation, flying_wahini. Can you offer any insight into this seeming contradiction? Could it be they're not as certain about their after death destination as they profess to be?

(111,938 posts)that there is no existence after that on the Earth, I can rationalize why Christians are fearful. How many other religions are out there where people face judgment after death to determine whether they spend eternity in heaven or hell? There is more to fear as a believer than as a non-believer.

(6,537 posts)This is the same demographic as those who refuse to wear masks at our local grocery stores. They are almost always white, usually middle aged, more men than women, but both. Almost all other groups wear them. I see lots of younger people (also mostly white) without masks, but in a fairly liberal area, i am making the assumption that most are vaxxed.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)Comparing ALL atheists, whatever their background, race, other demographics with white evangelicals, a very small sliver of religious people, doesn't tell us much of anything - any more than comparing, say, white atheists with Black Jews would Tell us about whether atheists are more likely to get vaccinated than religious people.
The percentage of atheists vs. non-atheists would tell us something. This means nothing.
Even looking at the limited groups of religious people in the Pew poll, the numbers are very different than the tweet suggests. While atheists do report a high percentage of vaccinations - 90% - some other non-believers have much lower numbers. Catholics and Protestants also have a high degree of vaccination - up to 86% for some of them. But oddly, Pew doesn't include statistics for Black Catholics in this report
It also doesn't include Jews or Muslims or Hindus or any other religious group besides Protestants and Catholics in its report. So this poll really tells us nothing about the difference in vaccination rates between Atheists and religious people But it does tell us more than this meaningless tweet lets on.

Vaccine exemption letters
Published September 14th, 2021 by Bobby Henderson
Many people have asked what is the Churchs stance on vaccinations and vaccination mandates.
Many have asked if we provide exemption letters.
I find it weird that religious exemptions are an accepted thing in general, seems like it would be best to leave public health policy to the most knowledgable, not religious leadership. But if Churches must take a position on the issue
I am happy to announce that we are offering Official letters for those Pastafarians who would like to be exempt from working in proximity to the unvaxxed.
The unvaccinated may emit harmful virus particles which are forbidden to devout Pastafarians, therefore we expect all reasonable measures to be taken to help us avoid these virus particles. Please respect our religious liberty.
Create your letter here with this form I made. Enter your information to get an Official letter (PDF).
