dropping the hammer (in whatever manner is at the state's disposal) on them.
A relative of mine in a red county forwarded to me a covidiocy manifesto that their local politicians are circulating and it's obscenely stupid: vaccines are dangerous, vaccines cause new variants, vaccines are war crimes, natural immunity is better, hydroxychloroquine works, ivermectin works, bad COVID cases can be treated at home without hospitalization, all government rules and guidelines are a violation of your rights, etc.
