Law enforcement "taking no chances" on September 18 rally at U.S. Capitol

Federal, state and local law enforcement remain on high alert ahead of Saturday's "Justice for J6" protest outside of the U.S. Capitol.

Although intelligence suggests there will not be widespread or significant violence, federal law enforcement officials and groups that track domestic extremism told CBS News they remain concerned about the potential for "lone wolf"-style violence or individual "knuckleheads" using the gathering to cause trouble.

The FBI is monitoring chatter picked up on social media sites and message boards, including Telegram, Parler and Gab.

"I wouldn't say really informed people are worried" about the threat level from the online chatter, a federal law enforcement source familiar with the rally planning told CBS News. "But they are taking no chances."

Safety first...I think there will still be that attention seeking radical few that will push their agenda.

. . . but these statements don't give me the warm and fuzzies.

Online chatter. Hmmm. . . Where have we heard that before? Oh, yeah. I believe they heard "chatter" in August 2001, and, yet, on 9/11/01 four aircraft were hijacked and crashed into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and a hill in Pennsylvania.

What is law enforcement doing - now - on the ground in DC? How many District, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and agents will be on the ground beginning Saturday? Or are they going to "mobilize" when needed. We saw how well that worked on Jan 6. Who's in charge? What one person has command of all the resources available?

Look, I get it. This could very well be like that latest "rally" by lunatic lindell. 10,000 expected, 300 showed up. If so, that's great, for all sorts of reasons.

I guess it's easier to be a pessimist than an optimist. but it's hard to be otherwise these days.
