General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI have been following Covid 19 stats on the Worldometer site for months now. For the
last four or five weeks Florida has been racking up 15,000 to 25,000 cases a day, but their death total has only been in single digits, 3-9 for the same period. Any other State with that many cases has hundreds of deaths per day. How is Florida doing it? Do they have super special hospitals, or does hot, sweltering weather cure the virus on its own? Certainly the bodies have to be stacking up somewhere. And why are hospitals not bringing up the fact that they have dozens of bodies on ice, but no public mention of them?

(19,066 posts)They're reporting deaths once or twice a week. The Times has absorbed their data better than Worldmeters whose system seems to be choking on it.

Long story short, Florida is seeing 350 deaths a day now. They'll release data again tomorrow and their deaths will rise by 2500+.
And the whole idea for DeSantis though is to control the media narrative around his Covid failure, and it's working. Florida is probably seeing some bad days with 5 or 6 hundred deaths right now, but it's not making any headlines because they only report once a week.

(23,314 posts)but I doubt Florida can be trusted to report anything accurately.

(21,635 posts)Last year, there was an estimated undercount of 150,000 Covid deaths nationwide.
That is: 3.39 million total deaths - 2.88 million expected deaths (510,000) - 365,000 official Covid deaths.
Half of that probably came from Flawrida.

(102,267 posts)is doing everything possible to "reclassify" deaths to other non-COVID causes where possible and to delay reporting (to spread them out to make it look less dire than it is).
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/us/covid-cases.html (scroll down to the table of recent trends).
I'm not sure how worldometer gets its data, but I suspect their source is reflecting the kind of time lag in reporting from offical FL sources while NYT may be going around that.

(972 posts)and died they died from the pre-existing condition and dont get recorded as a COVID death. On the other hand he was trying to get those mobile trucks so everyone could get the monoclonal antibody treatments but I cant believe that means he has saved hundreds of lives a week. Something doesnt add up for sure!
If this is true it will come out sooner or later. Didnt he fire that data person Rebekah Jones who wouldnt fudge the numbers? She has a congressional campaign going in Pensacola.

I think he is way overestimating his popularity for President and I have doubts about retaining the governorship. He is more intelligent than TFG but just as evil!

(5,526 posts)I had the same reaction a few weeks ago and called bullshit. So I went looking for information.
It is about registering deaths on the day they happened instead of when they are reported to the state. The net result is that the time lag in the difference shows up as a steep drop off temporarily. It will catch up over time.
It skews the numbers really badly and is very misleading. In the long term it is more accurate but very inaccurate in the short term.
Here is an article from Fort Lauderdale that describes it.

(14,856 posts)They delay reporting and deaths get added back later to previous dates. Scroll down and look at the deaths graph for Florida on Worldometers, it shows what has been going on pretty clearly. Don't be fooled by the apparent huge drop-off in deaths in the last few weeks - some don't get reported for a month or more.

(65,031 posts)I just looked at Worldometer.
They must be going back & smoothing out the daily data.
On August 23, the 7 day MA was 310 deaths.
On September 10, it fell to 75.
There's a likely data dump coming soon and the chart will be adjusted accordingly.
