https://www.wavy.com/news/politics/virginia-politics/virginias-race-for-governor-is-neck-and-neck-new-poll-shows-ahead-of-first-debate/The voters know Terry M. was a good governor. Yet, he is barely ahead of this nut. I heard one of Youngkins commercials today and he said he wants to eliminate taxes for groceries to help working class families. I hope democrats in Virginia see what the other red state governors are doing and get out there and vote. There are a lot of people that are very pissed about the changes Northam has made. I agree with his changes. In the back of my mind I wonder if it was too much to fast for a state that was red/purplish not long ago. Fingers crossed that Northern VA will have a huge turnout. Oh and there is a debate tonight. Hope Youngkin has a bad night..

"Food" food is taxed at 2.5%
Beer is taxed at 6.0%
In some cities and counties, prepared food is taxed at 10%.
A rotisserie chicken bought at the grocery store in Alexandria or Arlington is taxed at 10%. Buy it in Fairfax County, and there's no prepared food tax. It's taxed like other groceries.
I'm working from memory, so I could have some percentages wrong.

(46,016 posts)We don't pay any taxes on groceries. We do on beer, of course, and things like bandaids and freezer bags, but meat, veggies, milk, etc. aren't taxed. I thought everyone was that way.
We had a "snack tax" for a while on things like potato chips, but it was so unworkable, it was dropped. For example, how would you classify a granola bar? It's so much like a cookie.

Activate America handles postcards for many campaigns.

(13,856 posts)SC Democrats led on that issue and got it passed about 5 years ago. Several studies have shown that it was one of the most progressive tax code changes in the last 25 years in South Carolina.

Hes a Trumper, so its unlikely he has any plans.
See the WaPos endorsement of McAuliffe, today.

(46,016 posts)Running on keeping a tax on food is a losing proposition, and insisting on keeping the tax to avoid a deficit makes you sound like the worst sort of Republican.
