'My dad didn't have a fighting chance': Covid is leading cause of death among law enforcement
"It doesn't make me invulnerable," said one police officer who has been vaccinated against Covid-19. "But I'd rather have as much protection as I can."

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund said in a recent midyear report that Covid-19 is the leading cause of death for officers nationwide. According to the nonprofit, from Jan. 1 to June 30, 71 officers died of Covid-related causes, more than firearm and traffic-related incidents combined. The number has continued climbing since the report was released, with 133 officers having died of Covid to date this year, the nonprofit said.

Last year, more law enforcement officers died of Covid-19 than any other cause, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

Many police officers, including Erin Tokley, died before a vaccine was widely available or before they could get vaccinated, and while performing jobs that put them in close contact with their communities as the virus spread. But others have lost their lives as people around the country, including law enforcement officers, resist vaccination.

Even as Covid-19 surpasses other causes of death for law enforcement officers, many police unions, including in Chicago, New York and Seattle, have fiercely opposed vaccine mandates.

1. Lots of cops/fire/EMS put themselves at considerable risk to do their duties in pre-vaccine days...

And I would like to recognize that certain brand of bravery and honorable behavior to the extent that it was warranted at the time.

But if cops nowadays insist on cashing in their Herman Cain Award, I only hope they don't hurt anyone else with their dumbassery on their way out of existence. Bye-bye.

3. Wonder if steroid use amongst cops

is having some effect. Steroids can suppress the immune system, which seems like a bad thing to do during a plague

12. I think you may have a point. I work out a lot and I'm 53.

I know for a fact that most guys in their 50s and even 40s, who are walking around looking like The Rock or a low body fat fitness trainer, now are using testosterone replacement therapy at a minimum and things like clenbuterol and anavar as well. And there's also straight up human growth hormone.

So now you see pictures on the internet of 60-year-olds with the telltale big traps and popping shoulders super vacularity and they're explaining how they're natural or they don't use steroids and I just shake my head and go f*** you a****** liar.

Cops probably use at a rate of 40 to 50 to 60%.

So macho attitude I don't need no mask and depressed immune system equals death at pretty high rates.

5. But the COVIDiots say, "fuck the blue", just like most of them over Jan 6. In my town

Saturday, they're having a terrorist sympathizer, COVIDiot, flag humpin' hootenanny, in a park about 1/4 mile from our COVID slammed hospital. I'd hope for rain if it would move all of them indoors at this point. There is no chance of getting them to listen to reason now. Might as well get it over as quick as possible.

7. Are they vaccinated and still dying?

No? Then why aren't they vaccinated?

Yes, I do have sympathy for those who died before the vaccine was available, but since about April of this year there has been zero excuse for not getting the vaccine.

Periodically I see some kind of obit for someone who died from Covid but was planning to get the vaccine. Really? What took you so long?

If you haven't got the vaccine by now, then too bad.

There have been many threads on DU about police refusing vaccinations and police unions protesting vaccination mandates.

Cause and effect ?

10. Law enforcement unions are doing a great disservice to their members by standing against vaccination

COVID is the leading cause of death among law enforcement? Why? Is is really scary to know that there are so many MAGAs among law enforcement across the country.
