It used to be that expressing the concern that immigration threatens to undermine America was considered unacceptable in political discussions. Most Americans believe that immigration makes the country stronger, not weaker, and such assertions hark back to the grim treatment of immigration as a political issue a century ago. Then, politicians demonized immigrants and passed laws restricting their arrival, an effort generally understood to be at odds with the countrys ideals when it wasnt explicitly racist.
So its strange to see the idea that immigrants pose a threat to the country emerging as an acceptable, if not preferred, talking point. It came up recently, as such rhetoric often does, on Tucker Carlsons Fox News show, where he argued that Democrats were encouraging wave after wave of immigrants to reshape the electorate to their advantage. Weve repeatedly seen the ways by which political claims are used as proxies for racial ones in recent months, and Carlsons track record makes clear that his concern is about more than there being a new counterweight to his Republican vote.
After Carlson elevated and sanitized this argument thats popular among self-proclaimed white nationalists (for obvious reasons), it began propagating out through his party. Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) invoked it during a discussion about immigration in April, for example. But just in the past 48 hours, two prominent Republicans have made the same argument as did Carlson.
First was House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), who, in a campaign ad published on Facebook, argued that Democrats were planning their most aggressive move yet: a PERMANENT ELECTION INSURRECTION. That was manifested, the ad said, in the lefts plan to grant amnesty to 11 MILLION illegal immigrants will overthrow our current electorate and create a permanent liberal majority in Washington.

Texas Lt. Gov. Spews Racist Great Replacement Theory on Fox: A Revolution Has Begun
Republican Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick unabashedly hyped the white supremacist Great Replacement theory on Thursday night, ominously warning Fox News viewers that Democrats are using immigrants to take over our country without firing a shot.
Appearing on Fox News The Ingraham Angle, Patrick discussed Texas Gov. Greg Abbotts emergency order shutting down six points of entry along the southern border amid a renewed surge in migrants. In the border community of Del Rio, U.S. Border Patrol says there are more than 9,000 migrants crowded into a temporary staging area, with thousands more expected to cross the border soon.
It didnt take long for the lieutenant governor to liken the massive wave of migrants to an invasion of the country and the destruction of the GOP.
Let me tell you something, Laura, and everyone watching: The revolution has begun, Patrick told Fox News host Laura Ingraham. A silent revolution by the Democrat Party to take over the country.

Unless you are a native American descendent, we are all immigrants
Republicans could create policies that are good for everyone, not just the rich/white and maybe they would get more votes

(5,123 posts)Reagan definitely pushed racism, so hes not the role model of treating people fairly . However, He also created a path to citizenship with amnesty. Its just interesting to see how the republicans have changed their tune on immigration.
The real irony is that their ignorance and racism definitely show with their replacement rhetoric. If they were not so damn racist, they would realize that many immigrants already identify with conservative ideas. Many are religious, come from patriarchal societies, anti abortion, anti gay as a result of their religion. I dont mean that they are hateful homophobes.
But the republicans are so stuck on white supremacy, they would rather push hate than welcome non whites into their fold.
