Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in a recent interview with CBS News that the CDC was never prepared to handle a crisis on the scale of COVID-19, and that the U.S. government suffered from "a failure of vision" since the start of the pandemic. The agency thought to be the gold standard for public health is better equipped for data analysis than decisive action, he said.
"I think it's very difficult for an agency to have this self-awareness that they don't have the capacity to respond the way they're being asked," Gottlieb said in an interview with Margaret Brennan, moderator of "Face The Nation" and CBS News' chief foreign affairs correspondent. "And I think it's very difficult for an agency to self-organize differently in a setting of a crisis."
Gottlieb, who led the FDA from 2017 to 2019, is the author of the new book, "Uncontrolled Spread: Why COVID-19 Crushed Us and How We Can Defeat the Next Pandemic," which comes out September 21. The book includes criticism of the CDC, and Gottlieb says the agency couldn't meet the moment when a crisis came.
"They're not a logistical organization. CDC has a very retrospective mindset," Gottlieb said. "It's a high-science organization that does deep analytical analysis of data that's oftentimes out of sync to when the decisions need to get made."

Not true. Obama left the Trump administration a pretty detailed plan on how to deal with a pandemic. The Trumpers as usual thought they were smarter than everyone else and ignored it.

(25,746 posts)as in several decades, the common wisdom was that at some point another deadly flu virus would get out there, and more or less replicate the 1918 flu pandemic.
Covid isn't flu, but the aspect of being a pandemic should still be the same. It's disturbing that the CDC, despite decades of knowing another major flu pandemic could occur, was so unprepared.

(10,068 posts)there was SARS in the early 2000s, and a possible ebola epidemic (thankfully fended off by a competent administration). Then there were the polio epidemics in the 40s and 50s, and the yearly flu, and measles, and - well, the list goes on.
The CDC - the Center for Disease Control - is supposed to take decisive action. That's why it has "control" in its name. But why do I have the feeling I'm dealing with a clueless Trump sycophant?

(101,705 posts)it cut its teeth from inception on disease outbreak investigation and control. Its Epidemic Intelligence Service is unsurpassed and has been both exported to and copied by countries throughout the world.
CDC was instrumental in worldwide polio eradication and without a doubt smallpox eradication would never have occurred without them. Every major emerging infection in the past 75 years worldwide has been investigated and expertise from CDC brought to its study and containment.
Gottlieb knows NOTHING about CDC. He spent two years at FDA--not one minute at CDC or NIH. And, his time at FDA was under TRUMP. F... off, Gottlieb.
No, the past two years have not been CDC's shining moments, but Gottlieb is wrong about the reasons behind that. Under Obama, CDC was instrumental in helping develop the pandemic plan that never saw the light of day under Trump.

"Often, Mr. McGowan and Ms. Campbell mediated between (CDC director) Dr. 'Robert' Redfield and agency scientists when the White Houses guidance requests and dictates would arrive: edits from (White House budget director Russell) Vought and Kellyanne Conway, the former White House adviser, on choirs and communion in faith communities, or suggestions from Ivanka Trump, the presidents daughter and aide, on schools. Every time that the science clashed with the messaging, messaging won, Mr. McGowan said."
