Big cats at Smithsonian Zoo test positive for coronavirus
Good luck enforcing this mask mandate.
Six lions and three tigers at the Smithsonian National Zoo have tested presumptive positive for the virus that causes COVID-19.
Zoo keepers became concerned when they experienced coughing, sneezing and lethargy as well as a change in appetite in several of the animals. The zoo announced Friday that it was treating a half-dozen African lions, a pair or Amur tigers and a Sumatran tiger for the virus, all of which remain under observation. Test results are expected in coming days.
The source of the infection is unclear. The zoo said a thorough investigation staffers whod been near the lions and tigers netted no clues, though its possible an asymptomatic carrier was responsible. Workers are asked to wear masks indoors, though employees vaccination status is confidential medical information, the Smithsonian states.
