(9,435 posts)Medicine is a lot better than what we had in 1918, and that we can keep more people alive.

(33,986 posts)so that would be about .654% (103.2 million x .654% = 674,928)
that same percent for current population (333.3 million) would be 2,179,782.
thankfully we are no where near that number.
google is showing the US has 673,000 covid deaths as of eight hours ago. so that is about .202%
worldometer is showing 690,714 US covid deaths which is about .2073%

(130,126 posts)My grandmother died from 1918 flu.
Dad was the youngest of 5 children in the family. Fortunately, my grandfather was strong enough to keep the family together.

(15,776 posts)We keep making the same mistakes. Science n Medicine n Forensics have advanced but people have not. Squawking about wearing masks. Same bs excuses about not getting vaxxed. I watched a documentary on the 1918 Flu n it was as if it was today. Hospitals overwhelmed n still people not getting with the program. Its 2021 n we should be over this by now. This milestone did not have to happen even if the population is higher than then. Maddening

(989 posts)Dr. Dean was among the first to sound the alarm - way back in 2019, in fact - on the dangers posed by this virus.
She said that we are looking at 1-3 more years of this misery unless we get the entire world vaccinated. The reason for this bleak assessment is that without widespread vaccination, deadlier and more vaccine-resistant strains will inevitably develop. If I'm understanding this right, the more virulent the strain, the higher the threshold for herd immunity to kick in.
Sobering.
