Every motorist should carry a vinyl pouch on their vehicle dashboard containing license, registration and proof of insurance. That way, when a cop stops you, he won't shoot you when you reach into your wallet or purse for your ID because it will all be in one handy place -- where anyone walking past your car will see it and steal it.
No, I am not joking. From DailyKos:

On both Twitter and Facebook, MnDPS announced its solution to cops shooting and murdering motorists in traffic stops was to offer these bags, in which they expect motorists to put their documents, so that when complying with a police officers order to produce them, that the police will not see the motorist reaching into their pocket and murder them on the chance the motorist will pull a weapon out.

(42,862 posts)... and in every instance I had plenty of time to retrieve my driver's license and insurance/auto-reg BEFORE the office approached the car. My window is already rolled down, my hands are on the wheel, and I'm holding all three in plain sight.
My license and insurance card is always in my purse/billfold... my registration is always in the glove compartment. (Inside the zippered-keeper along with the truck's service manual.)

(58,785 posts)glove compartment. Used to keep it next to me, but now that I'm old I need that space for antacids.
Seriously, I thought I was doing good to get everything ready until a cop friend told me putting my hands on top of the wheel and keeping them there makes happy cops. Or at least less nervous ones.

(58,785 posts)which reminds me of Walter Matthau in Charlie Varrick. Charlie had a great wife who favored that technique for taking out cops.

(5,169 posts)there is a couple of minutes while they run 'wants and warrants' before approaching. It is very easy to have the relevant documents out before they walk up to ask for them. Whether they ticket you or not, they are going to ask to see these. Why not be proactive?

(22,037 posts)Last year, I was stopped by police for making an illegal left turn; I didnt know it was illegal and I was perplexed by the stop. I rolled down the window and kept my hands in sight on the steering wheel.
When the cop explained the situation, I asked for permission to retrieve my documents from the glove box and my wallet. I moved slowly and deliberately and handed them over. He took them and retreated to his cruiser.
When he returned, he gave them back along with a verbal warning, no ticket. Then we both went on our ways.
This took place in NYC and Im a white man. Surprising, huh?

(21,765 posts)I got "tuned up" by cops twice when I was young (still have a scar where one hit me in the head with his shotgun barrel), but these days they are quite nice to me.
I talked to an old friend from our "running" days, and he said if you are an older white man with no visible tattoos you are gold with the cops. I have to agree with him.
