Study: COVID booster recipients 20 times more protected against serious illness

https://www.timesofisrael.com/study-covid-booster-recipients-20-times-more-protected-against-serious-illness/

As US officials set to mull okaying Pfizer’s 3rd dose, data from a million Israelis shows it boosts protection from infection tenfold compared with eligible people who got 2 shots.

A new study conducted in Israel shows that individuals given a third COVID-19 vaccine dose are nearly twenty times more protected against serious illness and more than ten times more protected against infection, compared with those who received their second dose at least five months previously.

The research, published on Wednesday by The New England Journal of Medicine, showed that 12 days after receiving a booster shot of a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, the chance of infection was 11.3 times less than among those eligible for a third shot but didn’t get one.

And the chance of suffering serious illness as a result of COVID-19 among those who had received a booster shot was 19.5 times less, the research said.

No wonder the FDA voted against boosters for all 16+.

Are you thinking J&J again or mRNA.

I had 2 Pfizers & am planning to ask about a Miderna booster.

Pls do check with your medical provider.

Following up the one shot vaccines with one of the mRNA options could even offer better protection.

I'm thinking a Moderna jab, but have to check because I had 2 Pfizers first.

I'm not a doc, but wouldn't common sense say that, since infection is much lower, transmission would also be lower? Especially as many fully vaxed get asymptomatic or mild cases, both of which often (~30%) result in long haul (Dr. Eric Ding Twitter).

Seems so to me! The more people infected, the more it will spread & mutate!

Shame on the FDA (in my non medical opinion)!

These agencies are outdated imo. If I'd listened to them in 2020 at the start of the pandemic about masks not being helpful, I'd likely be dead or long-hauling. Same for CDC's "brilliant" retraction in May, retracting mask recommendation.

I had a kid with lyme 20+ years ago. Learned a lot about these agencies & the fact that it is up to each of us to look after and direct our own health needs, with the assistance of a qualified healthcare provider. 😉

These opinions are based upon personal experience & those of experts, such as Dr. Eric Ding, Harvard epidemiologist's Twitter. He is SUPER critical of the way our health agencies have been handling the pandemic.

Someone who is not infected is not going to infect others.
So I really don't get FDA. Given the high infection numbers in US, why not approve boosters for everyone? That would reduce infection/transmission rates.

My second Pfizer shot was March 16, so I could get one now. Last time I checked with the clinic where I got my shots, they were saying eight months so Monday I may call back and ask if they've changed their guidelines.

Meanwhile, I got my flu shot last Monday, and a recommendation to get the Shingrix vaccines as soon as possible which has to be done at their clinic not in my primary doctor's office.

I knew a woman who had Shingles and after her description, I decided I'd better get Shingrix. I had chicken pox as a kid, along with the other illnesses we kids got back then. My only issue was that because of Covid, they stopped giving the shots for a few months, and the two shots have to be given within 6 months. I just got in shot #2. And I had no side effects except the expected sore arm.

When my then new doctor finally diagnosed the herpes infection that has lived in my left hand for almost fifty years - it recurs sometimes and acts just like shingles. He was hoping that it would knock out the infection, plus since I had chicken pox as a kid, it would also protect against shingles.

Since that first vaccination, the recurrence of the infection has slowed down, but it still recurs. So he's hoping that the newer two shot vaccination might do better. Plus, I still want as much protection from shingles as possible. My Dad had shingles more than once and I know how miserable he was.

I don't care if I get a sore arm - it would be so much less painful than the actual disease. The one place in my hand is horrific when it flares up - it feels as though there is a lit cigarette held against the area if I don't catch it quickly. I've learned to recognize the tingling in the nerves before the flare and keep valcyclovir on hand to take immediately. With that, it just tingles for a day or two, then goes away

Good for you on both counts!

Looking forward to getting mine!

I'd just called pharmacy where I'd gotten both Pfizers & pharmacist said no need to wait 28 days between covid 3rd shot & flu vax "anymore." Contrary to what I've read in credible media.

Obviously, 3rd covid jab is my top priority!

Ty!
