Recall vote highlights California's geopolitical divisions

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The California recall election was a blowout win for Gov. Gavin Newsom that reinforced the state's political divisions: The Democratic governor won big support in coastal areas and urban centers, while the rural north and agricultural inland, with far fewer voters, largely wanted him gone.

“It’s almost like two states,” Menlo College political scientist Melissa Michelson said.

Though California is a liberal stronghold where Democrats hold every statewide office and have two-thirds majorities in the Legislature, it is also home to deeply conservative areas. Those residents have long felt alienated from Sacramento, where Democrats have been in full control for more than a decade.

A conservative movement in far Northern California has for years sought to break away and create its own state to better reflect the area's political sensitivities.

Every state has it's rural/urban divide. The reality is people vote (and pay taxes) not land.

A better take on this story would be; "California recall election shows that rural California is just as racist, ignorant and backwards as the rest of Rural America".

This kind of shit is why the media always trots out to interview some toothless dipshits in Beaver County, PA, while ignoring Pittsburgh.

or at least often a group that is barely a minority is equally alienated by our legislature yet we never, as in not ever, as in not a single solitary time, have we had national journalists interview us about this fact. I am sure it has nothing at all to do with the fact that many of our voters are racial, ethnic, or minorities due to sexual orientation or gender identity as opposed to being overwhelmingly straight white males.

Medicaid and farm subsidies. The later should never have been and must be eliminated.

Have these people been hibernating for the past 2 decades? Have they ever bothered to look at a map of election breakdowns before? There was nothing unusual or unexpected about last Tuesday's vote breakdown: it happens reguarly, with just about every election.
