Republicans who let Trump 'bully' party will seal midterms defeat, senator says

One of the seven Republican senators who voted to convict Donald Trump at his second impeachment trial warned on Sunday that the former president’s “bullying” of the party would lead to electoral defeat in next year’s midterms and beyond.

Bill Cassidy of Louisiana was speaking days after the Ohio Republican congressman Anthony Gonzalez, who voted to impeach Trump over the US Capitol attack, announced he would not seek re-election.

On Saturday another Trump critic in the House, Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, released a hard-hitting video statement in which he told colleagues “silent” about the state of their party the “time for hiding is over”.

Cassidy told NBC’s Meet the Press: “Politicians are not victims. Politicians make a choice. If we choose to look forward, bringing positive solutions to the American people who have needs, we win. If we choose to be bullied, we lose.”

It looks like he’s prepping to run for Governor. But compared to John “Aw Shucks” Kennedy our other Senator, it isn’t too difficult for Cassidy to look liberal.

3. Given the failed J6 support rally & the CA recall defeat, Repugs should realize they need a new path

forward. If Trump is their only hope of a leader and their best policy approach is Just Say No and they have no plan to really address issues, even these morons must realize they are in a really bad place. My big concern is that the so called Repug base is all too eager to swallow lies and half baked conspiracies and still vote Repug when now years of evidence points to the fact that is in almost no ones best long term interests. So, you can count on 35%+ of the electorate to be Repug votes no matter what and they just need to continue to bamboozle 16% of the electorate and they still win.

7. But if they don't bow to Trump, they might lose the racist, sexist, xenophobe, homophobe vote.

That would leave them with only the Republican voters who aren't racist, sexist, xenophobic and homophobic like . . . um . . . what was that guy's name? Um, you know who I'm thinking of. Is it Herman Cain? Oh, wait, he died of Covid that he contracted at a Trump rally. Never mind.

9. Therefore the hatred is the problem - boxing it, rejecting it, changing it, back-in-bottle it

Tell us how his base will reject those buttons when TFG pushes them and we have a solution.

I see it as anti-government hatred on all levels of MAGA - from the real estate mogul hating regulation, through oil and coal companies, from polluters, from financial services right down to small business owners rejecting Social Security taxes that they pay for employees and on down to Obamacare premiums for the self-employed. They are tied together, and when you push the hate button you get attention and a rebellion.

So solve this problem. COVID attrition does not solve it, it's a couple thousand votes per Congressional district.

Get to the ROOT of the problem as described.
