Why it matters: Manchins new timeline if he insists on it would disrupt the plans by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to vote on the budget reconciliation package this month.
Driving the news: Back home in West Virginia last week, Manchin told a group of employees at a Procter & Gamble facility in Martinsburg he wanted to pause all the talk about the $3.5 trillion bill until 2022, Axios was told.
Those semi-public comments track with some of his private conversations about how long he wants to impose the "strategic pause" he floated in a Wall Street Journal op-ed this month.
Manchin didn't give a specific timeline in his op-ed.

(6,035 posts)Without the two voting rights bills, the Republicans could be calling all the shots in 2023.

(10,856 posts)To some Dems that will agree to dump the filibuster, we wont need Manchin and Sinemas votes to keep it. 😃

(26,697 posts)He can get "this" by just declaring it to be so. He doesn't need to "trade" anything.

(10,378 posts)and Manchin's gonna do it for them.
Then, blame will be on "the squad" even though the liberals have been working WITH Biden, and are living up to their end of the deal to pass both bills.

(53,475 posts)'22 will delay infrastructure projects and thousands of good jobs and economic boost they bring which will help us Dems in the '22 mid-terms to keep our Congressional majorities.
Makes one wonder if he's in league with the republicans.

(10,150 posts)He clearly isn't. He is his own party, he does what he is told to do by whoever pays him the most. He isn't a fucking Democrat FFS. He's a wolf in sheep's clothing. I don't care if my post gets hidden or reported. It's time to stop pretending that they can coral him in. We can't, the same with the other "Democrat" from Arizona. We have two rogue congress people who are not working for anyone but their own self interests.

(51,975 posts)It's basically no, and a "deal" in the unlikely event we actually end up with an exactly 50-50 senate again.

(4,223 posts)If he wants to squeal about that, he's welcome to add that to his legacy. Stop catering to this guy and put ANY pressure on him. Parent him, make him eat his peas, whatever. There has to be more they can hold over him.

(5,689 posts)This way they can fiddle around with the reconciliation bill for a few more weeks and then run on having passed both bills for the rest of the year until the midterms.

(25,170 posts)What is HIS reason for the pause? Not speculation. I want to hear from him why he thinks a pause is needed until 2022.
