All I can think of are private boats to Cuba and the Bahamas. He could hide in the Bahamas, but I think we have extradition with them.

The police had better advise his parents that they can be charged for helping him escape or stay hidden.

I would not be surprised if they funded his departure from the country but just said he went off into the swamps.
