Anything not young, white, pretty, and blonde doesnt seem to move the meter at all.
Makes me wonder about all the women of color whove met that fate or are listed as missing (if indeed theyre listed at all!).

(115,692 posts)Off course what happened to her is a terrible thing, but this kind of coverage seems to be limited to crimes where the victim is not only white and female, but young, blond, attractive, and middle-class. Coverage of the disappearance or murder of Black women, or Native women, or homely women, or old women, or poor women, tends to appear only in local news outlets to the extent there is any at all.

Those being ethnicity, gender, appearance and age.
Racism so entrenched in peoples' thinking it goes unnoticed.
This case just ticks all the right boxes, so gets all the media attention.
It's sickening. Not this case, it deserves media attention, but that others are ignored because they don't tick those boxes as much.

(118,654 posts)were arrested for raping that poor investment banker, that a black woman went up to the roof of her building in the NYCity area to watch the sunrise. She was attacked and raped. She was thrown off the building to kill her but she grabbed onto some tv cable wires attached to the building and hung there screaming for help for more than a few minutes. Her story did not get nearly the coverage the Village Voice pointed out. Both gruesome. They should have gotten equal coverage. And if course the tragedies were worsened in that the Central Park 5 were innocent. This story is newsworthy due to the silence off the boyfriend here but so are the deaths if so many black women.

(18,486 posts)I'm sorry about what happened to this poor young woman, but this is NOT national news and certainly doesn't merit the hysterical, herd-like coverage it's receiving.

(6,917 posts)The body camera images made the story sensational from the start. An African-American student disappeared from the Mississippi River bridge in Baton Rouge, Louisiana last year and it was a featured story for days.
Not to excuse networks that target programming to racists, but lumping in all media is too broad a criticism to be taken as a serious, fact-based observation.
And again, it doesnt excuse the drivel on stations and networks that target racists for their racist advertisers. But the connection between companies that sponsor racist content for profit and racism is seldom mentioned. Those are your media bad guys.
