I've enjoyed the Hallmark series "The Good Witch" for quite a long time now.
Yeah, yeah, it's cheesy, it's sentimental, it's corny in the extreme, the "acting" sub-par. It's a guilty pleasure of mine, to slip into Middleton and watch an impossibly cute small town and its impossibly beautiful all upper-middle-class denizens.
So sue me!
Anyway, just found out it's been cancelled due to viewership decline due to....the introduction of LESBIANS!!!!!
Bible-thumpers were OUTRAGED, not by witchcraft, apparently but TEH GAY!
It was all wholesome, occult family fun until LESBIANS showed up and RUINED EVERYTHING!!!!!
So, Hallmark hashed out a hurried ending to the whole thing an pulled the plug. Nevermind that several storylines were left hanging unresolved, they had to STOP THE GAY MENACE!!!!
Good GAWD, how I hate religious people who force their (hypocritical) values on others....

(549 posts)I don't know how anyone who can watch the Hallmark channels. You can literally smell the Holiness emanating from the TV screen. They only recently started including Black actors, but only in supporting background roles of course
Coventina
(26,846 posts)I don't see people who look like me very often in their programming.
But this was an example of them making an attempt at representation, and it looks like their audience shouted them down.
It's disappointing and sad.
But, before you demand a purity test for viewership of TV shows, you should be aware that there are many DUers who:
1. Shop at Walmart
2. Use Facebook
3. Drive pickup trucks
4. Eat meat
5. Own guns
and other so-called "liberal no-nos". We don't have a behavior standard here, and if I want to watch something that I enjoy and entertains me I'm only going to apologize to the extent that I did in my OP.

Which is: why would gay people be more dangerous than witches?

(32,320 posts)I get lifetime/hallmark mixed up. I think lifetime has the "woman gets revenge movies". Hallmark has the "woman returns to help failing pumpkin farm / inn / chirstimas tree farm" and meets handsome guy movies

Some of us enjoy movies that are just plain uncomplicated fun, with happy endings. A sorely-needed respite.

(53,823 posts)While there has been a marked increase in GLBT representation, it is still quite piss-poor, and, often, the representation we do get is paltry or "understood" but never explicit. Frankly, I am a bit surprised because when it is lesbians, usually it gets a tentative pass, unless the lesbians don't conform to heterosexual gender norms.
Coventina
(26,846 posts)Apparently, witches are just fine and dandy to these bigots (although there is PLENTY of Hebrew and Christian scriptures forbidding occult practices).
But put in a non-hetero normative relationship and it's Katy bar the door!

(53,823 posts)On mainstay stations, it may not be as prevalent, but the pressure can and does sometimes alter the course of a show. Also, there still are very few shows with main characters who are GLBT, and almost NONE with them as leads.

I think if they cater to anyone it's middle-aged women as broadly as possible, although they want to cultivate a younger demographic so that their audience doesn't just eventually die off.
A lot of women of my acquaintance, in my approximate demographic, have gravitated to Hallmark when they can't stomach more shows like "Breaking Bad", "Walking Dead", "Gangs of London", and so many other "marquee" shows that are a constant grind of adrenaline, fear, suspense, and violence, while also being sick of reality shows.
There really aren't many scripted dramas that aren't total gore-fests or just flat-out depressing.
Hallmark is really too much of the other: too white-bread, pretty, and sentimental, but I did enjoy "The Good Witch" because it did break that mold by at least being a little spooky at times.

Good Witch lost me somewhere after the 3rd or 4th episode, but they're always pretty good for an hour or two escape from life.
I like the Gourmet Detective series... And there are a few holiday movies that I look forward to.

(3,818 posts)Lucifer aired 3 more seasons after changing to Netflix. (Not quite the same -- the writers don't understand the esoteric side of angelology like Bruckheimer did on Fox. He was sly and put in a lot of Qabalistic & Angelic teachings, plus the humor in the Fox episodes.)

(26,846 posts)Season 3 (the last one on Fox) was by far the weakest.
I'm sad to see it end, although it is not a show that's sustainable for too much longer (how to explain immortals aging?).
I'm soooooo glad Netflix saved Lucifer and gave us those extra seasons.
I'm disappointed to learn about Catherine Bell being a Scientologist. However, it didn't seem to make its way into the show, so still enjoyable for me.
