Regardless of who wins we will have wounds that will never heal. That is because the hatred between Democrats and Republicans seems to be deepening by the hour. It will get particularly nasty if Obama wins. I wish that were a guarantee but it will not be.
And God forbid Romney wins, we will have to go to war with him on every issue just like the GOP has on us. We will have to minimize the damage Romney and the GOP will do. The GOP has already severely crippled the country in every possible way.
I do not see any peace or progress after the election. Republicans that I encounter are in a bloodthirsty rage and their racial viciousness and hatred overcomes any semblance of sanity. There are two totally different and hostile views of where this country is to go. There is absolutely NO MIDDLE GROUND now in my opinion.

Maybe not in the years I have left, but surely in those of my children and grand children.
I went through my teens in the 60's. I lived exciting times and saw progressivism at the high end of it's swing.
Much of my life since then has been under a pendulum swinging in the opposite direction.
We are out near the extreme of the rightwing swing. This won't last. No matter how painfully durable this seems, it will end, probably soon.

(13,141 posts)The sixties was a big wave.. it receded, but there have been more waves, big and small.
Obama's election based on hope and change, that's a hugely good sign, and it's still alive.
Occupy Wall Street was a good sized wave, there will be more.
The tide is coming in, in my opinion, I remain hopeful. The peace on earth has to
come from all of us, each of us, one at a time. That's where it starts and ends.

(14,524 posts)The damage done to so many of us, is so devastating and life altering, there is no "getting over it." There are literally millions of us that have been abandoned in our time of need, by the very society we worked hard for and played by the rules, our entire lives. The seething anger from being so betrayed, is not something you can just forgive and forget.

(10,558 posts)The vitrol, the almost civil war schism that exists today is all but negligible when our economy booms. History shows this clearly.
Fleshing out my thinking here: When one has extra money jingling around in one's pockets, a portion of ones thoughts are focused on how best to spend that extra money. When that economic status changes, when one's money is no longer 'extra' but instead mostly (if not all) earmarked to day to day survival, ones thoughts are on how things became so dire!
It is under these negative changes in ones economics that one tends to look to one's politicians seeking answers and resolutions. The middle class which was once large and happy and mostly distracted from politics becomes intently focused on recouping what they once had, taking on extra work AND seeking help from their politicians becomes the norm.
We see how the educators and the spinmeisters have the attention of the masses right now. Where two decades ago the average guy on the street would have been hard pressed to name the three (supposedly), 'co-equal' branches of government, you now have that same guy in this forum arguing the nuance of Marburry vs Madison! (Using me for an example).
This schism is mostly within the poor and the middle class here in America. The hate between the two sides of this schism, the hate which is so deep that it could plunge us into civil war again, is one of personal economics and one of manipulation by those seeking to deepen that schism in order to reap financial gain for themselves.
Educating the masses, or as Jefferson said it: 'Democracy requires an enlightened electorate', is key to bringing back what we once had-is key to eroding that hate filled schism.
When common guy on the street clearly sees who is picking his pocket he unites with those who already see this. The "Change We Can Believe In" starts with him. The hate between us ends when we educate him....and ourselves.
We ARE ALL in this foxhole together. It is up to us to lower guns aimed at each other, to instead find the ways to educate each other! Then and ONLY THEN can we present a united front to push back against the darkness, to stop the greedy bastards who rob us of our money and steal from us our democracy.
