WASHINGTON (AP) A federal law enforcement officer was arrested carrying a gun at Saturdays rally at the U.S. Capitol billed to support the suspects charged in Januarys insurrection but will not be prosecuted.
The 27-year-old New Jersey man is an officer with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. He was arrested by Capitol Police for illegally possessing a gun on the grounds of the Capitol after people in the crowd reported seeing him with a handgun and notified nearby officers.
His arrest and presence at the event were surprising because the rally was billed as an event to support those who have been charged in Januarys riot. That riot left dozens of police officers beaten, bloodied and bruised as the crowd of pro-Trump rioters, some armed with pipes, bats and bear spray, charged into the Capitol, quickly overrunning the overwhelmed police force.
During Januarys riot, one officer was beaten and shocked with a stun gun repeatedly until he had a heart attack; another was foaming at the mouth and screaming for help as rioters crushed him between two doors and bashed him in the head with his own weapon.

Right wingers get slaps on the wrist AND cops cover for cops.

(95,244 posts)Probably because there is no reason that would stand the light of day. If he was not present in any official capacity, he is just one more criminal insurrectionist. One all the more dangerous to the country because he betrays it from within.

(43,049 posts)off duty. A friend of mine used to be annoyed this and had his wife carry the gun in her purse a lot.
Could this guy be under the same rules?

gratuitous
(82,849 posts)That's like finding out white people support Nazis. In fact, it's exactly like that. I guess Mr. CBP just wandered into the Capitol from New Jersey and just happened to be carrying a firearm. Happens all the time! Nothing unusual about it. He's free to go and live on an island somewhere.

If he was not there on official duty, he should be charged like anyone else would be.

(8,327 posts)He could legally possess his weapon there.
bottomofthehill
(8,327 posts)He was not charged because there is nothing to charge him with. As a police officer he is allowed to possess his weapon under the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act. He was at the protest this weekend, not the riot on 1/6. He was not engaged in an illegal activity. He is only guilty of stupidity. And being a duche cop who supports insurrectionists. Who beat cops.
