This is all well-timed for Monday's debate.
The Obama administration was scrupulously honest at all times in presenting the CIA's analysis of what went on in Benghazi. No politics were played, no knowingly false stories disseminated.
Obama should note that as President he has to stick to the facts as the intelligence community knows them. Unlike candidate Romney, he doesn't have the option of making up the facts he thinks would best serve a political campaign.
A note about the information back then. There was an information vacuum because the WH was not leaking at the time. Into that information void, the only version being leaked to the press was coming from the Libyan government, which had an interest in the incident being international jihadism, rather than homegrown ordinary Libyan crazies. So all the articles were about it being al quida but the White House did not "admit" (in Romney's parlance) what "everyone knew" because the CIA was not officially supporting what everyone knew.
Talking points prepared by the CIA on Sept. 15, the same day that Rice taped three television appearances, support her description of the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate as a reaction to Arab anger about an anti-Muslim video prepared in the United States. According to the CIA account, The currently available information suggests that the demonstrations in Benghazi were spontaneously inspired by the protests at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and evolved into a direct assault against the U.S. Consulate and subsequently its annex. There are indications that extremists participated in the violent demonstrations.
Meanwhile, an article published yesterday afternoon in the LA Times suggests that these initial reports remain what US intelligence still believes happened: an attack with relatively little advanced planning, a high degree of disorganization and at least some level of triggering by the riots in Cairo earlier that day.

(3,526 posts)...what do people normally think when somebody mentions an "exploding cigar"? A comedy routine of some sort, right?
Just my opinion, but this is a very serious issue, not deserving of some kind of comedic entry line.
