NC needs the voting rights bill more than literally anything else the feds can do
Our state has a rogue legislature, that currently, thank God, is held in some degree of check by a governor and supreme court. Thanks to a court mandated redraw, that took 8 years to happen, Democrats managed to break the super majority in 2018 and it is still broken now. But, it is redrawing time again. Our governor has no power at all, in that redrawing. So they will get a super majority in 2022, and a 10 to 4 split in the Congressional delegation even if we win a clear majority of the two party vote in legislative races. We also will have supreme court seats up (we have a 1 seat majority with all four of our seats up, none of theirs). If the feds don't pass anti gerrymandering legislation the best case scenario is that we will have a GOP supermajority able to pass any crazy law they want. We could easily see our supreme court gerrymandered as well. Given that we have 7 seats on the court and 14 Congressional districts, we could see each court seat span 2 districts. That would give them a 5 to 2 court in perpetuity and allow them to do literally anything they want. Ban abortion, done. Reinstitute sodomy laws, done. Concealed carry without permits, done. One voting place per county, done. Early and mail in voting, gone. There is literally no check on legislative gerrymandering here. None.
