Americas Cops Are Throwing a Sick COVID Temper Tantrum

The coronavirus killed more police officers in America last year, 145, than the 135 who were killed on the job in 2019 by gunfire, heart attacks, car crashes and everything else combined.
This year, COVID-19 is on track to again be the leading cause of death for cops, though the still-climbing death toll could be significantly slowed by the vaccine, which is widely available, highly effective and, not for nothing, a solution the National Fraternal Order of Police asked their 350,000 members be given early access to back in January.
But cops around the country are not only refusing to wear masks where theyre required and when theyve been ordered to, theyre also vocally opposing vaccine mandatesthreatening walkouts, demanding exemptions on specious grounds, and, in many places, filing lawsuits. The grim reality that one out of every 500 people in the U.S. have died of COVID since the pandemic began isnt apparently enough to motivate many police to get vaccinated.

(16,954 posts)I think its an excellent way to weed out those who shouldnt be cops in the first place. If they are too stupid to take one simple step to protect their own lives they sure as hell are too stupid to protect any one elses.
Mad_Machine76
(24,355 posts)they are potentially harming all of the people they interact with. It is scary that the "To Protect and Serve" people aren't concerned about protecting (although too many of them have always been rather selective about who they protect and serve).

i disagree in general, but this right here? it really could. between dying and getting fired, it could easily change individual stations.
there was a vid here in the last week or so w a guy who did an analysis of who was there on 1/6. his biggest take away was it was rednecks in blue areas. big cities.
the cops in chicago have always been rw'ers. there's a cop who has a blog that is as vile as anything at freeperville. or parlor. has a huge following.
i hope they quit in droves. but die works for me, too.

(9,232 posts)The profession attracts authoritarian types. Theyre only following orders. Let then die.

(48,790 posts)Thus the love of forcing people to lie flat spread out on the ground, even in ridiculous circumstances and then to taze or arrest for "disobeying lawful orders" / "resisting arrest".
Like that deaf or autistic guy year or two ago tazed by the cops.
Like George Floyd's murderer.
Like so so many examples.

(52,130 posts)they are all about eliminating it no matter the cost to the general public in terms of civilian shootings, but for this, which, it should be pointed out actually killed more cops last year than died in any other way on the job, they are don't bother.
