Florida’s new surgeon general opposes mask, vaccine mandates

TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Ron DeSantis announced a new surgeon general for Florida on Tuesday, a Harvard-trained doctor who advocated for an approach to the coronavirus pandemic that emphasizes protecting individual rights over community-based precautions.

Dr. Joseph Ladapo, a UCLA researcher who expressed skepticism that vaccines could help end the pandemic, said Tuesday that he would “reject fear” as a public health strategy.

“The state should be promoting good health, and vaccination isn’t the only path for that,” Ladapo said. “It’s been treated almost like a religion, and that’s just senseless.”

He said the state should be supporting many measures for good health: “vaccination, losing weight, exercising more (and) eating more fruits and vegetables.”

The quote “vaccination, losing weight, exercising more (and) eating more fruits and vegetables” seems reasonable general health advice. The anti vax idea is nuts but that is not differently then I have been told my primary care physician has told me.

but so many people in excellent shape have been taken down by this virus, some who've even died. The vaccine is a much bigger variable than overall health. Just like masks are helpful, but not as important as the vaccine.

Harder than any other group other than children and the elderly. Comorbidities can complicate things, but it's not the whole story by any means.

It's not hard to find quacks. You'll find them in every field. Sometimes you don't even have to pay them to be certifiably stupid. The fact that they're outnumbered by hundreds of thousands of colleagues who think their ideas are bat shit crazy doesn't seem to phase the quacks or the quack hunters. We've seen the same bullshit in climate science for decades now. Before that it was tobacco. And on and on.

Maybe since he's black, DeathSantis thinks he's an unassailable quack. Sorry. A quack is a quack even if they're purple with pink dots.

but you're going to get them to jog, go to a gym and sweat with others, "give up their cheeseburgers", eat vegetables etc..

Really? And he sees this as a viable strategy for beating COVID?

Good luck with that.
