Aussie Earthquake

This morning’s earthquake was Victoria’s largest ever recorded on land
By Liam Mannix

Geosciences Australia has confirmed this morning was the largest earthquake ever recorded on land in Victoria.

The largest earthquake ever recorded in Australia was in 1968, a 6.5-magnitude in Meckering, Western Australia.

The largest earthquake ever recorded off-shore near Australia was a 6.6, in July 2019, 100km off the coast of Broome.

‘Hundreds of small aftershocks’: Victoria hit by earthquake, warnings of more to come

Victoria could be hit by aftershocks in the coming weeks and months following a 5.8-magnitude earthquake which caused building damage across Melbourne and was felt as far away as Canberra on Wednesday morning.

Geosciences Australia said the earthquake was recorded near Mansfield, about 180 kilometres north-east of Melbourne, at a depth of 10 kilometres, just after 9.15am.

A smaller tremor (4.0 magnitude at a depth of 12 kilometres) was recorded about 15 minutes later, and a third (3.1 magnitude at six kilometres) hit at 9.54am.

Dr Gary Gibson, principal research fellow in seismology at the University of Melbourne, said the earthquake was “the largest I have seen in Victoria in the last 50 years”.

Most of Australia is geologically stable, Victoria being among the most stable of the stable. In my memory, there have been three or four quakes that were felt widely. I've never felt one ... this time was no exception, I was busy setting up a new mitre saw and had no idea until the emails from overseas rolled in asking if the dog and I were OK!

Looks like some of Betty's Burgers' bricks fell into the street in Melbourne, but otherwise hopefully no major damage - and no tsunami threat. That's a relief. Congrats on the new miter saw. With aftershocks coming, you might want to be extra careful with the woodworking tools today.
