Okay, watching after that was pointed out, I can stipulate they were reins and not whips.
But the way they were used, is there really a FUCKING DIFFERENCE????

(53,726 posts)racist, cowboys were enjoying, a couple had big grins on their faces.
Such inhumanity. They'd never do that to white people.

(11,235 posts)but it does make a difference
1) because the stunningly obvious racial connotations inherent - in this context (or almost any other) a whip as a specific object is hugely meaningful in its symbolism and associations - in a way that any other means of assault really is not.
(think a lot of people failed to make the connection? I sure as hell don't!)
and 2) because the original inaccuracy, followed by the pile on that followed (see above) - gave us another, "see there - don't even know what they're talking about!" moment on the national stage.
And, again to state the obvious - we could use fewer of those rather than more.

(53,726 posts)It's still white men on horses herding and beating Black immigrants like they're animals.

(11,235 posts)and without any justification.
But a whip - as a specific instrument ... There's just too much symbolism and history there to say, "it's all the same." It isn't.

(53,726 posts)herding and striking Black immigrants with who the hell cares what you call the actual things they're whipping them with. They're still treating them like animals and the world will see those photos, and our enemies will use them to say: "See, the Americans always go on and on about human rights and this is how they treat Black immigrants."
There will be no mention of reins not whips.

(11,235 posts)which just enhances the offense a couple degrees.
(we're probably going to agree to disagree here) -- --
brush
(53,726 posts)and no one on the continent of Africa, where we want to establish better relations, and where China is moving in, won't hear the narrative here about "whips" being used, as you say. They'll see what their eyes tell them...white men on horse back herding and striking Black immigrants with what looks like whips.
And no way you can tell them not to believe their lying eyes.
It's a huge mistake and heads should roll behind this.

(3,456 posts)So, instead of writing :
"Government agents on horses hitting refugees with whips"
One must now write :
"Government agents on horses hitting refugees with things-that-have-been-officially-declared-to-resemble-whips-but-are-officially-not-whips."
Good to know.
