A college professor in Illinois has been charged with a hate crime in connection with a confrontation outside a grocery store in a Chicago suburb earlier this month. Alberto Friedmann, 53, allegedly spat on a Black woman and yelled racial slurs at the woman and her 7-year-old daughter in a dispute in the parking lot of the Oak Park store, NBC reports. Prosecutors say the woman was parked outside the store but not blocking traffic when she heard Friedmann "honking and yelling" in a Jaguar behind her, per CBS Chicago. He allegedly yelled slurs when she motioned for him to drive around her. He then allegedly got out of his car and spat in the woman's face when she tried to leave her vehicle.


The woman had been waiting for her mother, who witnessed the confrontation after leavint the store. According to court records, the professor told the woman he spat on her because he "doesn't like Black people." Friedmann has also been charged with aggravated assault. Prosecutors say that when the woman got out of her car to try to get his license plate number, he accelerated toward her, narrowly missing her and deliberately hitting her vehicle, causing damage on the driver's side, reports the Chicago Tribune. Witnesses intervened when he got out of his car a second time.

Prosecutors say that when police took him into custody, Friedmann admitted spitting on the woman and hitting her car. At a court hearing Sunday, Friedmann's lawyer says his client denies using racial slurs. "He’s a minority himself. He’s a child of immigrants," the attorney said. Friedmann teaches neurokinesiology at the National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, another Chicago suburb. The institution says he has been suspended pending an investigation.

Friedmann suffers from Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, an inherited condition that causes overly flexible limbs, as well as early-onset Parkinson’s disease, McNamara said. His wife suffers from a debilitating condition that requires 24-hour care. He was also featured on a segment on Discovery Health Channel, discussing the constant threat of his limbs dislocating because of his EDS condition.

The judge ordered bail, saying she “couldn’t ignore” the circumstances of the incident taking place in front of a child.

“May I make one statement?” Friedmann asked after the judge made her ruling. “Don’t say anything please,” his attorney answered.

I don't agree with this thought process at all, but it appears that is what is being pushed by his defense.

Alberto Friedmann sometimes lights candles on Shabbat. He once competed in the Maccabi games. He was confirmed and became a bar mitzvah as a youngster. Today, he still celebrates many of the holidays and even taught his stepchildren the dreidel game.

His Judaism is important to him.

“It’s a large part of how I became who I am,” said the 45-year-old. “It is a central aspect to me as I am now.”

However, Friedmann does not belong to a congregation and has little or no connection to the organized Jewish community. Part of that is a function of distance. He lives in Highland, Ill., nearly an hour’s drive from a Missouri synagogue. But more to the point, he’s still looking for the right fit.

Somehow, that has never resulted in my calling someone a racial slur in the Safeway parking lot.

Why should I feel empathy for these people? I mean seriously. . .

He's a deranged violent human being who put not just a child at risk - but two women as well.

Actions have consequences - but of course . . . He'll get a slap on his wrist, community service etc. etc.


When the victims are black - the justice system and America are against us.
