than it took for find the body of Gabby Petito.

(5,327 posts)One is that they had a good tip about where to find Gabby and dead body's don't move around much. At this point there is a decent chance Laundrie isn't even in the preserve, just because you enter doesn't mean you can't walk right back out in another place.

I don't believe a damned word his parents say.

(35,454 posts)but if you were going to slip away, wouldn't you try to get out of the country? Of course if he did, I assume the airlines would be able to say but it is a pattern used by people of 'interest'.

(35,454 posts)he would need to get to a place where there is no extradition
Xolodno
(6,390 posts)...and they will probably refuse him entry. But I hear Belarus, Oman or Sudan are nice this time of year.
The Federales usually don't bother as they are up to their eyeballs with local police corruption, drug lords, gun smuggling from the USA, etc.
Some white guy who broke in the law in the USA hiding out in Mexico and probably violating their immigration laws, yeah, they have plenty of those. As long he doesn't cause any trouble, they won't worry much. Because if he did cause trouble, he'll be in a Mexican jail before they deport him. Not some place you want to have the distinction of visiting.
Add to that, illegal immigration in Mexico is a minor infraction...in other words, give them what's in your wallet when they challenge you and you will be left alone for awhile. We have enough trouble getting drugs lords to be extradited, don't think they will go out of their way to look for him.

If the Laundrie's move, track their address changes and make their life a living f'ing hell until they give up the creep.

(14,853 posts)... one of my former girlfriends. (A few years after I broke up with her.)
He'd hung himself in a barn, located in another state.
I didn't even know about the murder of my former girlfriend -- which received almost no media attention despite how she was an extremely pretty blonde woman -- until my sister told me the story of her church friend's son being accused of murdering her. He was her roommate, and he's the one who called police in the first place. He found her dead on her bed after he returned to their apartment from work.
He immediately directed the police to search for her often-jealous boyfriend, but they couldn't locate him. Then after several days had passed, they started grilling the roommate -- lying that they had "proof" that he murdered her, so he should just confess to hopefully get leniency during the trial. Which he never did, but he told his mother that he ALMOST confessed to the crime that he didn't commit because they'd scared him so much.
Not long thereafter, somebody finally found the boyfriend's dead body hanging in the barn.
So it was the police and my sister's friend's son that were the focus of our conversation initially, but then my sister said the girl was so pretty and she told me her name. At that point, I must've turned white because my sister saw my reaction and asked me, "Did you know her?!"
I'd never mentioned that former girlfriend to my family. I figured they wouldn't approve of the "provocative" ways that she often dressed, and I eventually decided to just end the relationship anyway.

(33,284 posts)That must have been awful to experience, and probably still is.

(14,853 posts)My thoughts were, "Maybe we'd still be together if I hadn't broke up with her, and she'd still be alive."
I was feeling jealous around her too, after seeing other guys ogling her in public. But I would've never killed her! My reaction to the jealous feelings was instead, "Well, I'm getting out of this relationship." I'm certainly not the kind of guy who would ever want a "trophy wife", that's for sure.
And I wasn't even honest with her about it, since I didn't feel it was my place to complain about how she dressed. That's how she dressed when we first started dating anyway. She was a very sweet person, so I had some regrets about it even before learning about her murder.
Her maiden name was extremely unusual, so that's how I knew it was her that was murdered. She was briefly married to another guy before we started dating, and that's the surname that my sister told me initially. So I was thinking, "Uh oh. It might be another woman with the same name, though." Then my sister said her maiden name was very odd, finally remembering it. That's when I must've turned ghostly-white, and my sister picked up on my reaction.
She looked a lot like the singer Kylie Minogue, who was often shown on TV around that same period.
Then I also learned from my sister that my former girlfriend had been a high school classmate of HER daughter -- my niece who is only 6 years younger than me -- and she later showed me one her daughter's yearbooks, asking if that's who I had dated. Yes, that was her. (She looked like a "tomboy" in high school, though.)
It was so bizarre how I even learned about the murder. It wasn't even covered by the local news very much, not enough for me to ever see it.
My speculation - He got a little too violent and killed her without intending to. He then freaked and drove where a fairly young kid drives when in trouble - home. Now, the parents may have helped him skip town, but I'm thinking more that he killed himself, seeing no way out of his problem.

(8,445 posts)Same build. Same hairstyle. He was super friendly, but I think that was to throw everyone off.
It's funny that nobody else picked up on the fact that we were in the presence of a murderer. Everyone else seemed so calm.
Seriously, though, I hope he's found soon. I think he's probably dead, but I hope he's alive so he can clear up what happened and give her family and friends answers.

(10,885 posts)at the parents' bank accounts to make sure a large withdrawal isn't funding their "missing" son? I'd also be checking to see if there's a safe in the house that may have contained tucked-away emergency funds. If Laundrie is on the move, he can't use cards or ID b/c he'd be tracked. I don't believe for a moment he's in the swamps, although being a wilderness dude, he could be almost anywhere.
Maybe I watch too many TV crime shows!

(25,224 posts)Have no idea how much of a "wilderness dude" he really is.
Both he and Gabby seemed to have a "suburban kids on a road trip" vibe.
But I agree bank accounts, phone records.
Don't know if they can get parents' records without getting another warrant.
Maybe I don't watch enough true crime shows.
All I know, is he got on a airline, there would be a record.
I know you can take private boats and private planes to the Bahamas and not get caught.

(34,135 posts)Who bombed Centennial Olympic Park, abortion clinics and a lesbian bar (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Rudolph#Bombings). He spent five years in the Apalachians ducking authorities. He had lots of help and better terrain than Florida swamps, but he still managed for that long.

(3,282 posts)If he had the capacity to run and hide he'd have done so before ever returning home.
This killing has the hallmarks of little to no organization. Body wasn't well hidden and no attempts were really made to cover his tracks. It was likely a spurt of the moment killing and then little thought given to how to get away with it.
After a couple of weeks of it becoming more and more clear he was going to be caught, I think he walked into the woods and killed himself somewhere within them. He shows no signs of a man who could evade police if he were truly on the run.

(19,972 posts)was on Anderson Cooper's show tonight with John Berman. Walsh is pretty sure Laundrie killed her. Walsh thinks the cops blew it since Laundrie was the only suspect yet they didn't move on him before his parents helped him get away.
