Former President George W. Bush will hold a fundraiser next month for the embattled Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., whose criticisms of former President Donald Trump have put her political career in jeopardy.
The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that Bushs first campaign event of the 2022 midterms will be in support of Cheney. Her father, Dick Cheney, served two terms as Bushs vice president. The fundraiser will take place in Dallas on Oct. 18.
His support of Cheney puts Bush at odds with Trump and his allies, who have targeted Cheney since she voted for his impeachment after the violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6. Cheney has also been outspoken in pushing back against Trumps claims that the 2020 election was stolen, repeatedly rebutting the former presidents baseless conspiracy theories. A Yahoo News/YouGov poll in August found that two-thirds of Republicans still believe the election was rigged.
Earlier this month, Trump formally announced his endorsement of a Wyoming attorney, Harriet Hageman, in her primary bid against Cheney. Hageman unsuccessfully ran for the Republican nomination for governor in 2018.

(5,306 posts)I hate all of Cheney's positions, but she's with us in our side in the fight to save democracy. Let's welcome all Republicans who join our efforts to save democracy.
When this battle is over, we can go back to fighting over all the positions we disagree on. Right now, saving our democracy transcends any disagreement we've had with them in the past.

(102,227 posts)but we exploited the aid he could provide in defeating Hitler--an example that might seem so far out of date but hard to argue with so I continue to point to it.
History is replete with examples of alliances made only out of pragmatism and immediate benefit. And that includes the arena of politics.
Me? Never one to advocate cutting off our nose to spite our face nor to ignore a major advantage.
Bush* has not escaped the assessment of history and historians. Nor will he.

All the PNACers are apparently trying to get the band back together
They'll use Liz to try grabbing the party from the Trumpers, and probably be showered with praise for rebuilding that "strong Republican party"

(2,570 posts)Can the old style Republican party make a comeback. They engaged in voter suppression to be elected as well, and who do they think they can appeal to. My bet is they are going to recruit lots of rich and famous African Americans and successful immigrants, especially those seeking a more religious (values) directed message (gag). They will still oppose education for all, fair wages and worker protection. They might promote environmentalism but only if the poor pay all the costs.
As least
Before you attack, please note, it is my opinion. I'm not selling it, just stating it.

And I don't care... she's one of histories most repulsive people and the recent anti-Trump position changes nothing.
Her approval rating among REPUBLICANS is 23%
