Do we even hear anything about this any more? Or has it totally been forgotten?
I've heard nothing in months, and it was something I was very hopeful about.

(10,643 posts)I really need this to happen.
I feel we're not hearing enough about SS, or Medicare

(3,166 posts)For a minute, I was hopeful that we might expand Medicare on both ends - cover every child up to the age of 18, and lowering the top age to 60. To me, that would be a good start.

(21,714 posts)But that's just me. They should drop it down to at least 60

(10,643 posts)there may be a lot of messaging about this, but I'm not hearing much.

(64,995 posts)Had it been dropped to 60, I would have retired 2 years sooner.
I turn 65 tomorrow, so I've been Medicare since September 1st.
I think lowering the eligibility age 5-10 years makes sense, and may encourage more early retirements which churns jobs and gets younger people getting better gigs for higher wages. That's economically stimulative.

(21,714 posts)If they voted to lower the age today, I don't imagine it would be put in place before next August which is when I turn 65. Things move at a smails pace through congress.

(10,643 posts)I'd really like to see Biden speak about it. I know he's juggling a lot

Hope you are doing well!!!

(10,643 posts)seeing if I get my ltd.
I am super frustrated with whats happening and don't want to be Charlie brown with the football. Again

(15,220 posts)But I think they were looking at lowering the age as a start
and nothing to my knowledge has even started.
I share the frustration.

(2,475 posts)Haven't heard boo on lowering the age for Medicare, and I'd like to know how they're going to shore up Social Security so it's there for all of us who have paid into it for our entire lives.

(6,390 posts)1. Increase Contribution
2. Raise the the age to access.
3. Decrease benefits.
4. Combination of any of the above.
In a better world, create a separate Social Security account with a set low minimum (say half a percent) and a guaranteed interest rate. And have the option to increase the size of the contribution to a certain maximum. Furthermore, this would be your account and your money and could designate survivorship benefits.
Also have the ability to borrow a percentage that gets repaid as you get paid (also have the option to pay it back sooner). That would go a long way in ending predatory loans, people with credit issues, help finance a home purchase, etc.
Finally, be able to start withdrawing tax free at 55.
Plus having a Medicare buy in at 55 would help as well. Shoot why not have a pre-buy in your younger years so if you are fired at 55, you can retire earlier.
Also, increase the number of allowable days of work after retirement.

(54,770 posts)Im doubtful the limited dental, hearing aid, vision benefits will pass in the current bills.
Medicares eligibility age could be lowered if people have to pay the full actuarial cost. But most of us will balk at that cost. It wont be as cheap as people think.

(2,262 posts)This is a no brainer. Medicare could be lowered to 60 by taxing all earnings even those above 130K.
I am hoping it happens in the next few years before I need them

(8,922 posts)If they win the mid terms or manage to steal the mid terms with their new voting laws its all over. I hope democrats take this up next year, it might be the last chance for that legislation for a while.

(54,770 posts)be changed much, unless benefit for higher income people is changed from zero.
I do expect some relatively small increase for higher income. But would be surprised to see Congress pass a 12 percentage point additional tax on people making over $175,000 or so.
