McConnell tells Democrats not to 'play Russian roulette with the economy' as the GOP plays Russian

roulette with the economy

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says Democrats are playing a dangerous game by not raising the debt ceiling to avoid a default on the US's bills, even though it's one he started.

"My advice to this Democratic government, the president, the House and Senate: don't play Russian roulette with our economy," he said at a Wednesday press conference. "Step up and raise the debt ceiling and cover all that you've been engaged in all year long."

McConnell isn't budging from his refusal to renew the nation's ability to pay its bills, known as the debt ceiling. He's vowing Senate Republicans won't lend the support needed to pass a measure aimed at averting a federal default, even as he says he doesn't want the US to do so. It may cause a financial meltdown and plunge the nation into another recession if Congress doesn't act in time.

"If Mitch McConnell wants to say Democrats shouldn't play Russian roulette with the economy, why is he the one that loaded the gun in the first place?" Zach Moller, economic policy director at the center-left Third Way think tank, told Insider. "He's the one that put the slug in the gun and stuck it on the table."

Even former GOP treasury secretaries reportedly tried to get Mitch McConnell to help avoid a debt default. He refused.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has repeatedly warned Congress of the dangers of failing to raise the debt limit before the US government runs out of money, prompting former Republican Treasury secretaries to step in and echo Yellen's concerns - to no avail.

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that former GOP Treasury secretaries Henry Paulson and Steve Mnuchin met with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to attempt to resolve the debt ceiling standoff between Democrats and Republicans, according to people familiar with the conversations. Prior to the meetings, McConnell had been vocal about his refusal to help Democrats raise the limit on the amount of money the government can borrow, and despite attempts from Paulson and Mnuchin, the Senate Minority Leader's stance did not change.

The consequences of a federal default on debt it owes for money already spent could be a loss of six million jobs from the American economy and $15 trillion in US household wealth, nearly double the unemployment rate to 9%, according to an analysis released Tuesday by Moody's Analytics.

According to the Post, both Paulson, who worked closely with McConnell in 2008 to address the economic recession, and Mnuchin expressed their concerns about the dangers of default, but both secretaries told President Joe Biden's administration following the meetings that McConnell still believed Democrats had to go at it alone in raising the debt ceiling.

The Dems passed debt ceiling increases for tRump even if they didn't believe in the spending. All of the debt ceiling increase is due to tRump's spending, nothing to do with Biden.

backed up by the chorus of RW media clowns and social media disruptors, enough people will forget it's TFG's debt that's on the table and happily sit by while the economy tanks and they lose their jobs, homes -- and lives.

Meanwhile, Manchin and Sinema will play their parts in this kabuki theater, joining Moscow Mitch in destroying the country they all say they love. If the GQP takes the Senate, anyone want to make a bet on how long it will be before these two switch sides? Without the For the People Act -- which their intransigence is blocking -- a Repug senator has near lifetime job security.
