CBS Chicago posted a video captured earlier today of several joggers, walkers and bikers getting caught up in some big waves along the waterfront. As the water started kicking up onto the concrete, several of them tried to run away from the oncoming waves.
Unfortunately, one woman couldnt outrun the water. She got caught by the waves and tossed around, nearly getting pulled into the river before being helped up by another pedestrian.
The clip has gone viral with tons of people expressing concern for the runners safety. Some of them are stunned that there was anyone trying to exercise around the raging waves:

(1,969 posts)If only there were areas here in the states that could take some of that water off their hands.

(68,352 posts)was to high. The undertow is awful. I never knew lakes had undertow until I moved to the Cleveland area.

(69,809 posts)the great lakes supply water to a whooooole lot of the country, but as others have mentioned, they are all pretty low after 2 years of drought.
strange part of which being that 3 yrs ago lake mich was at an historic high.
i'm less than a mile away, and it drowned a tree and an old grapevine.

(18,220 posts)Let's send water from where it is available to the areas that haven't been able to manage their water use to the supply. Once those areas of abundance are depleted we can address managing use when everybody doesn't have enough.

(6,477 posts)I've run it many times. You can see the twirly ride at Navy Pier in the background.
The Lakefront Trail goes down against that wall just south of Oak Street beach at the turn and stays that way for a little while.

was/is one of my routes. There's water washing on to the trail over there on a good day, especially Fullerton down to North Avenue.

(14,061 posts)She could have been swept away. Not from Chicago but I read stuff from others that said there were other, safer lakefront paths to run, bike, etc.

Sympthsical
(8,936 posts)When I lived in Chicago, I had an apartment along LSD, so I'd often go out along the lakefront. It's super peaceful and beautiful in the early morning.
So, one morning, the lake was being a bit rowdy like this. I decided I was going to bike from roughly Lincoln Park down to the Planetarium and back. Where I was near the Gold Coast looks almost the same as where the woman in the video was. Sure enough, a giant swell came rolling up. When it washed down, it swept my bike tires from under me.
No more biking that day!
The lake really is no joke when it looks like that. People think, "Oh, it's just half a foot of water at most." Yeah, that half a foot of water will take you, no problem.
