a stroke that messed up one of her eyes. The shingles may ruin the corneal transplant she had. At least with her, I know she was anti-vax in the first place, not just sucking up Tucker Carlson's BS. I don't resent those people so much, but fuck oh dear! The shingles vax was free too! She's right in a COVID hotspot too and is worried where she'll end up if she need emergency care.
There were gonna be the usual number of anti-vaxer's and people that couldn't get the vax. We could have maybe handled them if it weren't for all the others the bullshit has turned against the vaccines.

(38,958 posts)Sorry for her situation, but it seems that at least some of this is self inflicted.

(26,093 posts)I had a severe case of the flu
.my entire body ached very badly for about 3 days. And it started about an hour after the shot!
It was so bad I was in bed most of the time.
The second shot was a breeze compared to the first. But I am extremely glad I got it, since I had already had shingles twice.

(26,093 posts)was the pharmacist saying very casually that some people have a reaction about an hour after the shot.
From what I understand most people dont have a reaction like I did.
Hope you have a gentle reaction, Scrivener7!

The second dose I got along with a flu shot. Big mistake. I was slammed for a day but recovered quickly.
My wife had no reaction to either shot.

(2,173 posts)I got mine on a Thursday and was shaking and achy like a horrible flu case for about 48 hours.Called off work on that Friday. Went to bed Saturday evening miserable and woke up Sunday morning happy and normal. No response to second shingles shot or to covid.
Was the worst response I ever had to a vaccine (always have arm that feels like it's on fire with tetanus for about 36 hours but nothing form any of the other vaccines.
Well worth it. I've seen too many people get shingles and have it knock them around for real. Sick for 2 days was worth it.

(101,699 posts)For those eligible and on Medicare, most part B plans cover most of it. But this is a big problem and an unaddressed "hole" in the system.
That so many think because COVID-19 vaccine is free, that ALL vaccines must be is a real issue now. Hell, the uninsured can't even get a flu vaccine in many states because Medicaid isn't necessarily covering it either, though some local public health clinics will offer it and places like Costco will provide it for only about $25 even for non-members.

(14,225 posts)At least I don't remember getting billed for either shot. But I'm in MA, and a lot of coverage is mandatory here.

I don't know anywhere where the shingles vaccine is FREE, although some insurance might be better than others in covering it. Can you provide details on where you are and how that is being paid for? Medicaid doesn't cover it in most states either and I'm unaware if Medicare does, though probably many Medicare Part D plans do. I do know that for those not yet eligible for Medicare, the cost of the vaccine without good insurance is as much as $280/DOSE and two doses are required. I've encountered this with individuals who are only on Medicaid and have no way to obtain the vaccine if they want to eat.
But, this is a tragic situation--especially if she COULD have gotten the Shingles vaccine and chose not to.
