MCCONNELL: "Sucking up to Donald Trump is not a strategy that works."

The book quotes McConnell calling former President Donald Trump, “a fading brand. Retired. OTTB as they say in Kentucky -- off-the-track Thoroughbred.”

“There is a clear trend moving,” McConnell said, toward a place where the GOP is not dominated by Trump. McConnell added, “Sucking up to Donald Trump is not a strategy that works.”

If that’s true, it’s not advice being heeded by many Republican candidates who are thus far largely embracing Trumpism and defending the former president at every turn.

Of course, he’s dipping into this pile also, it’s what he does best.

He and other Republicans blasted Trump right after 1/6 but then only a handful (not including him) voted to convict him, so not sure how ineffective he is (and why are they still all enabling him)?!

Otherwise, how could he have parlayed himself into the White House? His dive-and-conquer politics of confrontation and obstructionism were McConnell's tools for years. Trump just took them to a new level. McConnell went partially toward that approach but he never backed off -- except briefly for tactical reasons. Sucking up to boat-anchor politics that are sinking the country? Still doing that.
