A controversial lawyer who helped raise the $2 million bail money for Kenosha double murder suspect Kyle Rittenhouse is now seeking to have the money returned to his organization at the end of the 18-year-old's trial.
Lin Wood, a defamation lawyer-turned-conspiracy theorist and influential figure in the radical QAnon movement, is attempting to have the money he pulled together to help get the teenager out of jail in November 2020 given to his #FightBack Foundation.
Rittenhouse is accused of killing two people and seriously injuring another during shootings at Black Lives Matter protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in August 2020.
The pro-Donald Trump attorney, who is currently facing sanctions for his dismissed lawsuits seeking to challenge the result of the 2020 election, managed to raise the $2 million to free Rittenhouse following a successful fundraising campaign backed by a number of conservative figures, along with fellow attorney John Pierce.

If it's refunded Wood will pocket it. Nothing will get to the original donors.

(20,491 posts)In short, if Lin Wood submitted the $2M to the courts, he will get the $2M back, assuming KR shows up.
The money won't/never has/probably never will go to the victims, as suggested above.
Bail:
-----An amount of money set by the court that the court feels would ensure that the accused will show up to court. If the accused shows up, the money is returned to whoever paid it. If not, it is forfeited to the court. Doesn't matter who paid it (family, friends, donors).
$2M is given to the courts, kind of in escrow, until the trials are over. If everyone does what they are supposed to do, the $2M is returned.
Bail Bond:
-----------The accused (or family, friends, donors) pays a company (a bail bond company) a non-refundable fee (actually, a bond is purchased), usually about 10% of the bail set by the court. The bail bond company has been vetted by the court and does not have to submit the actual bail to the courts UNLESS the accused doesn't show up. If the accused skips out, the bail bond company is authorized to apprehend the accused so they don't have to come up with the $2M.
A bond is PURCHASED, and the 10% will never be returned.
