A 23-year-old man carrying an airsoft rifle and pointing it at people in downtown Portland in early August pleaded guilty Thursday to unlawful use of a weapon and menacing.
Mark Allen Lee was sentenced to two years of probation on the menacing charge, a misdemeanor, with a list of conditions, including the order that he possess no guns, airsoft weapons or bear spray. Hes also required to complete 80 hours of community service.
Sentencing for the weapons conviction, a felony, was set over for a year and will largely rest on how Lee complies with the conditions of his probation.
He could withdraw his plea to the felony and the charge would be dismissed if he follows the conditions, but if he violates any of them, hell face 30 days in jail and three years of probation, according to court records.

(13,565 posts)2. Last evening, I walked through downtown Portland with one other person.
And we drove through most of the blocks we didn't walk.
I was looking for signs of the destruction and despair we hear about all the time -- "Portland is TRASHED" talk.
It didn't look any different to me than it ever did, except for the park by the Federal Courthouse fenced off.
Restaurants were full. Shoppers on the street. The open air restaurant next to the Historical Society was buzzing with diners. The Art Museum across the Park Block was holding a glitzy OUTDOOR reception of some kind -- hundreds of people in attendance socializing.
People walking their dogs everywhere. The choir was practicing behind the undamaged and unprotected old leaded stained glass windows of the old stone church on the corner.
Jewelry stores with glass windows exposed. Nothing boarded up or trashed.
Such a beautiful city.
Just for perspective.

I'm concerned. Same with the paintball guns. It's not up to a person looking at a barrel to identify it as a toy.

My son has an Air Soft Rifle and at first glance it looks just like an M-4. They are supposed to have an orange tip on the barrel but some of these guys paint it black. This guy is lucky that he didn't point it at someone who was carrying.
