Black people are less likely to be vaccinated against COVID-19, even though the pandemic has taken a disproportionate toll on them. Racial breakdowns of vaccination data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show Black Americans are lagging far behind other groups with only around 30 percent fully vaccinated.
This means vaccine requirements disproportionately impact the Black community, Hawk Newsome, the co-founder of Black Lives Matter Greater New York told Newsweek. His group is not affiliated with the Black Lives Matter Global Network.
Newsome, who organized a protest outside Carmine's earlier this week, pointed to recent data showing that less than half of the city's Black residents between the ages of 18 and 44 are vaccinated. "That means that you're excluding a tremendous amount of Black New Yorkers, from engaging in everyday actions," he said.

(15,669 posts)It would take a huge effort to ensure everyone is vaccinated. I think that should be the focus. Its important!

The what about Black people defense of Republican vaccine hesitancy
In New York City, we see a similar overlap of resources (or at least income), race and vaccinations. Zip codes with lower average incomes have lower vaccination rates and more non-White residents.
In other words, the reasons that low vaccination rates among Black Americans are not somehow a counterpoint to low vaccination rates among Republicans are as follows:
Black people are much less likely than Republicans to say that they refuse to be vaccinated.
There are about four times as many Republicans as Black people in the ranks of the unvaccinated and a slightly higher proportion of Republicans among those who say they wont get vaccinated.
Vaccination rates among Black Americans also reflect structural problems that often overlap with income.
Oh, also? Trying to rebut a largely partisan opposition to vaccination by blaming a historically disadvantaged group as the real problem without actually exhibiting any curiosity about the distinctions is not a real testament to intellectual rigor.

(3,844 posts)Does not trump well researched studies and BLM activists are not pushing Republican talking points.
There are reasons for vaccine hesitancy in the black community and we should be focusing on addressing those issues.

(53,726 posts)And many want to believe it. White, male evangelicals are the ones with the lowest vaxx rates.

(43,064 posts)"Black people are realizing that Democrats are almost as bad as the Republicans when it comes to their treatment of Black people," he said. "It's a very sobering feeling." But he added: "We're fully aware that Republicans only care about Black issues when it impacts them. They were pro-police when there was BLM protests, anti-police when they stormed the Capitol on January 6."
And while he disavowed any comparison between vaccine mandates and Nazi Germany or slavery, he believes they would be used "to make Black people second-class citizens."
Forcing Black Americans to make a decision to take the vaccine or lose their job is "completely unfair... because as a Black person, I do not trust the government," he said. "The largest numbers of unvaccinated people are Black. We will truly feel the penalty of not complying." Newsome said he would not get the COVID-19 vaccine until he can trust it is safe. "I think each individual has their own threshold," he said. "I'll know mine when I reach it."

(3,147 posts)Also, lying about Biden's administration has done nothing in BLM. Is a dead give away that he probably didn't even for for Democrats.
The black people don't trust the government argument doesn't make since. The government didn't develop any of the three vaccines. They were all private development.

(32,626 posts)and I agree that easy access to the vaccine and information about it, should be readily available, wherever you live.

(7,509 posts)This wasn't an issue with other vaccines, so get the damn COVID vaccine.
I got my vaccine in the Bronx, Co-op Circle to be exact. They were giving it away and they still are.
I have no patience for people like Newsome getting precious about mandates. Losing a loved one to COVID is a lot worse than the fearmongering surrounding the vaccine, so get the shot.
