Senior Ja-Quez Harrell, a former member of the school’s football team and one of the young men who was sent the problematic presentation, told the news outlet, “I don’t see why something along the lines of this is funny. I don’t see how it’s funny.”

“With everybody that was there, how come nobody stopped it?” Harrell added.

Taylor Marie, the sorority member allegedly responsible for the presentation, sent a direct message to Harrell.

“I did not mean for any of this to betargeted towards individuals and certainly did not mean any of this in a malicious way,” she said in the direct message. “It was not targeted at African Americans in any way. I can promise that,” she wrote.

The school suspended Alpha Delta Pi, which was soon disbanded, after a presentation comparing Black athletes’ looks to whites.

Methodist University suspended a sorority that was soon disbanded after members hosted an event that rated photos of Black football players based on attractiveness and compared them to whites.

Alpha Delta Pi had been asked to “cease and desist from all activities” on the private Fayetteville, North Carolina campus while officials from the university conduct an investigation.

Physical features, such as certain athletes’ dreadlocks and the appearance of the player’s lips and noses, were rated and compared in a PowerPoint presentation last week, as were attributes commonly found among African Americans.

As for Taylor Marie, she resembles ol' Margie Three Toes Greene inside and out. I wonder if they're related.

I didn't even go to parties I was invited to. I was a GDI.
I did play b-ball in the frat league, because each frat could recruit 2 nonmembers for the team.
I got asked by 7 or 8 frats each year. I chose the same frat twice & another 1 time, because they had the least annoying people! (I also wouldn't play on a team with former HS football players. So, that ruled out TEK. Even though I liked a couple of those guys)
Frats were just not a thing for me.

I played co-ed recreational university softball, which is where I learned how to enjoy sports. My previous experiences with sports had all been hellish.

A good Christian college house mate warned me that some of those softball women were dangerous.

He was correct, but in every way that was wrong.

And then in the late 60's there was the Black is Beautiful movement.

I was 14 and I remember seeing this huge sign on the side of a Manhatten building with the Black is Beautiful slogan and a giant picture of a black person.

Sure enough, the person in the picture was stunningly beautiful. Not because he (or she, can't remember) had typical features that white people considered attractive, but because the typical African-American features ARE beautiful. I only had to shift my mindset to see what had been there all along.

What a great movement that was!

I don't get it.....I never did. Heck, when I moved from England to Iowa when I was 14, a couple of giggly high school girls took me to a "pep rally" - it was so fucking ridiculous, I laughed.....these girls actually thought I would want to be a CHEERLEADER. I told him, WTF, why aren't you playing your own sports? This is STUPID. I hate, hate, cultish behavior. UGH.

I grew up in Durham and am familiar with the term 'Fayettenam'.

It's a bit dated. More of a political and class thing.

Minorities (especially women) are better represented in the military than in the general population.

That's largely an economic issue but I don't tend to think of the military of being supportive of racist attitudes. Tends to result in quick discipline.

Bad for unit cohesion.

This seems to be being handled appropriately by the school. I'd give them the benefit of a doubt before tarring and feathering the entire student body. Especially given the relatively high diversity compared to say.....UNC Chapel Hill.

Sorority suspended over racist presentation on Black football players at North Carolina college

The incident happened at Methodist University when a member of the sorority rated pictures of Black players in a PowerPoint presentation.

Sept. 24, 2021, 4:55 PM EDT
By Minyvonne Burke

Methodist University in North Carolina suspended Alpha Delta Pi following outrage over a racist incident involving a sorority member critiquing the appearance of Black football players.

The school said in a statement Tuesday that the sorority was suspended indefinitely, pending an investigation.

"We believe in action, and we are taking action. Last week, we immediately launched a thorough investigation of a reported incident. This week, the hearing process is already underway. We will complete the hearing process as soon as we can while also following our established protocols," the university said.

"Alpha Delta Pi has been told to cease and desist from all activities."

The incident in question happened last week when a member of the sorority rated pictures of Black players on last year's football team during a PowerPoint presentation, according to NBC affiliate WRAL-TV of Raleigh. The sorority member pointed out features that she found unattractive such as dreadlocks, noses and lips, the outlet reported.

But, the people in the room didn't say a word. That is worse.

They should be suspended.
