their people yetHealth officials in the United States have said Covid-19 vaccine boosters can begin for older and higher-risk people there. But at least 15 countries around the world -- most of them in Africa -- have yet to give at least one vaccine dose to more than 3% of their population.
Among them are Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation with more than 200 million people, and Ethiopia with around 115 million people, as well as Haiti, only about 700 miles from the US state of Florida.
War-torn Yemen -- where so far just 1.1% of the population has received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine -- was inoculating people at a rate of about 244 doses per day, according to the latest data compiled by Reuters.
The decision by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention means millions of Americans can receive booster shots of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine in the coming months.
But it goes against calls by the World Health Organization (WHO) chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, for wealthy nations to refrain from boosting their Covid-19 vaccinations until at least the end of the year, to allow more supply to reach poorer nations.

(30,722 posts)How much of the anti-science propaganda has reached these countries and how many or so-called vaccine hesitant. Should we be shipping them millions of doses and then have to beg them to take it?

(64,422 posts)As far back as May, Pfizer, Moderna & J&J were reporting a combined capacity of over 30 million doses per day. About a billion doses per month.
That suggests that base supply is not the issue.
Distribution to these countries may be an issue, and within those countries could be worse.
But, limiting administration of boosters doesn't solve that.

(10,119 posts)unvaccinated folks who want the shot I'm still going to get my booster as soon as I can.
Biden just donated 500,000,000 doses to countries in need and will be donating more as time goes by.

(2,868 posts)Refraining from mRNA booster shots here won't deprive a single dose to the developing world, as it would be completely irresponsible to ship those vaccines to places that don't have the required minus 100 degree storage facilities. Both Pfizer and the Biden administration (on behalf of the American people) have already shipped billions of vaccines to countries that can properly store them.
Personally, I'd like to eventually see those Americans that received the J&J single shot, receive a second shot of the Moderna vaccine (full not half), and that would allow the J&J inventory to be shipped offshore, as it only requires normal refrigeration. Fauci mentioned that trials of combo vaccines are already underway and look good so far.
